- Red Devils have thrown away a number of leads over the years
- Anthony Martial broke Everton hearts in the Premier League
By Euan Burns
Manchester United and Everton have an unusual rivalry. While there's definitely no love lost between the two clubs, they are unified in the joint hatred of the same team; Liverpool.
That said, games between the Red Devils and the Toffees always carry an electric edge, especially at Goodison Park. Some great players have turned out for both teams, most notably Wayne Rooney, but also the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Mark Hughes and Marouane Fellaini.
There have been some thrilling matches between the two sides over the years, so here are five of the best and their complete head-to-head record.
Memorable Games
Everton 3-3 Manchester United - September 2010
This was an incredibly dramatic afternoon at Goodison Park in which Everton took the lead after 39 minutes through Steven Pienaar. Darren Fletcher quickly got Man Utd level and Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov soon had Sir Alex Ferguson's side 3-1 up and seemingly on their way to victory by the 66th minute.
A header from Tim Cahill with just a couple of minutes of stoppage time to play meant Man Utd had late defending to do but they were unable to carry it out. Mikel Arteta's shot deflected off Paul Scholes and bundled into the back of the net in the 92nd minute.
Manchester United 4-4 Everton - April 2012
This is a really sour memory for Man Utd fans.
This draw at Old Trafford is viewed as the game that lost Ferguson's side the Premier League title in 2011/12. Had they triumphed, United could have secured the championship at the Etihad the following week. Nikica Jelavic made it 1-0 with a header but Rooney soon equalised.
It all seemed to be going well for Man Utd as Danny Welbeck and Nani made it 3-1 with only half an hour to play. Even when Marouane Fellaini got Everton back in it, Rooney added another to seemingly clinch it.
In the final ten minutes, however, Jelavic made it 4-3 and Steven Pienaar netted the equaliser, swinging things back in Man City's favour.
Everton 1-2 Manchester United - April 2016
The scoreline may not look as emphatic as the previous two matches, but this fixture had a hell of a lot riding on it.
This FA Cup semi-final provided Everton with a real chance of success against Louis van Gaal's Man Utd and the Toffees were well in the game with Lukaku going close to opening the scoring on two occasions.
However, it was former Everton man Fellaini who opened the scoring after great work from Anthony Martial. A missed Lukaku penalty showed it wasn't to be the Belgian's day but Chris Smalling later turned into his own net to bring the Toffees level.
Heartbreak was to come though as Martial played consecutive one-twos with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera before calmly finishing in front of the Man Utd fans.
United would go on to win the FA Cup before Van Gaal found out he was being imminently replaced by Jose Mourinho.
Everton 4-0 Manchester United - April 2019
Much has been made of Man Utd's modern day decline, but when the English giants are being battered 4-0 by Everton, you know things are bad. Most Man Utd fans were barely surprised by this result in 2019; that's how bad things had gotten for the Red Devils.
Goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott exposed Man Utd's many problems under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and it became starkly clear during this game - United's sixth loss from eight games in all competitions - that he was not the right coach to bring continued success to the club.
Everton narrowly missed out on European football, while Man Utd managed to grab sixth place. Solskjaer carried on for a surprisingly long time after this game, but was a sign of how things would eventually end.
Manchester United 3-3 Everton - February 2021
Once again, Man Utd failed to hold onto a lead against Everton. This fixture was played behind closed doors during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, so at least no fans saw it in person.
Edinson Cavani headed the Red Devils into the lead before a wonderful shot from Bruno Fernandes made it 2-0. They were cruising and although an error from David de Gea allowed Everton back into the game in the second half, Man Utd were still creating quality chances.
James Rodriguez delivered a sucker-punch against the run of play to level things up, but Scott McTominay made it 3-2 with only 20 minutes to play.
United were dominant throughout but they couldn't see the win through and a scrappy stoppage-time goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin meant it was one point apiece.
