Manchester United vs Liverpool is one of the biggest rivalry games in world football and one that fans everywhere instantly look out for each year when the fixture list is released.

The north west giants are England’s two most successful sides in history, with 39 league titles between them. But no matter the fortunes of either club at any given time, these games are often a great leveller as the passion of the occasion pushes form out of the window.

Here's a complete rundown of this historic fixture, including some of the most memorable contests these two sides have produced over the years.

The 1996 FA Cup final is best remembered for Liverpool's pre-match attire and a single moment of genius produced by Eric Cantona.

The 'Spice Boys' had done a fine job of neutralising the Frenchman amid a pretty drab affair, but the Reds couldn't keep Cantona out of the contest for its entirety. The enigmatic orator struck the decisive blow with five minutes to go to ensure the silverware went United's way.

When folk bring up 'vintage Barclays', this is one of the games that instantly comes to mind. Sure, it wasn't a back-and-forth classic, but everything about it reeks of nostalgia.

Whether it's the grey Liverpool strip sponsored by Carlsberg, Fernando Torres and his headband, or Gerrard kissing the Sky camera, this fixture at Old Trafford has the power to remind us all of simpler times.

The Reds were outstanding on the day, stunning the eventual Premier League champions. Nemanja Vidic was dismissed for the hosts as Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena were both on the scoresheet for Liverpool with stylish strikes.

Dimitar Berbatov immediately thrust himself into Red Devil folklore with his majestic display against Liverpool at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.

The Bulgarian's brace either side of the half-time break - the second of which was an unforgettable overhead kick - seemed to set United on their way to a comfortable three points, but Liverpool twice struck through skipper Gerrard to restore parity.

However, there was no way Berba's heroics were going to result in a meagre point. Determined to have the final say, the elegant forward towered over Jamie Carragher and headed home the winner six minutes from time.

Liverpool delivered a more humiliating Old Trafford thrashing 12 years after their memorable 4-1 win as they tore Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United apart.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds were on a mission following a injury-ridden 2020/21 campaign, and they were in irresistible form against their longtime rivals to pile the pressure on the United boss. The visitors were able to slice through a porous defensive structure at will, and they scored all five goals before the 50th minute mark.

The visitors seemingly felt sympathetic for the pitiful hosts this time around, but there was no such sympathy two years later.

Man Utd were seemingly on the come-up under Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman delivering the Carabao Cup to Old Trafford in his debut season. However, his side were beaten to a pulp by their old rivals at Anfield.

The 2022/23 campaign was one of disappointment for Klopp's Reds, and this was the distinct highlight. An initially tight and cagey affair evolved into a Liverpool thrashing as Salah became the club's record scorer during the unfathomable 7-0 win.

It was the biggest margin of victory in the fixture's history; a record that could stand for a very long time.

Every cup cliché was out to play to describe this humdinger of an FA Cup tie.

With a Wembley semi-final at stake, the two great rivals played out a belter at Old Trafford. Ten Hag's Red Devils were excellent in the opening 30 minutes, with Scott McTominay opening the scoring, but Liverpool barely had to break a sweat to overturn the deficit just before half-time.

Alexis Mac Allister equalised before Mohamed Salah scored his 14th goal against United to give the visitors the lead. Klopp's men controlled proceedings for much of the second half but their final third inefficiency would prove costly as substitute Antony restored parity in the closing stages from out of nowhere.

It looked as if Marcus Rashford would rue his last-gasp miss in normal time when Harvey Elliott struck in the extended period, but the Englishman atoned in the 112th minute. Penalties loomed, but there proved to be time for one final twist when United broke from a Liverpool corner and Amad Diallo sent the Theatre of Dreams into raptures with a pinpoint finish on the counter.

Such a conclusion was fitting of a belting contest.
