Manchester City 2-0 Borussia Monchengladbach: Player ratings as Cityzens ease into last 8

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan led Manchester City to a 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday night, booking the Cityzens' place in the Champions League quarter finals.

Pep Guardiola's side took just 13 minutes to open the scoring when Riyad Mahrez's lay off was emphatically thumped into the top corner from outside the area by De Bruyne.

Gundogan doubled the Cityzens' advantage just five minutes later, neatly finishing past Yann Sommer after a wonderful run and pass from Phil Foden.

The 'home' side shut up shop after the interval, with neither team seeing much action in front of goal. Guardiola's men saw the tie out more than comfortably and secured the 2-0 second leg win to ease into the Champions League last eight with a 4-0 aggregate win over the Foals.

Manchester City player ratings

1. Goalkeepers & Defenders

Ederson (GK) - 6/10 - The highlight of his night was playing a beautiful ball out to Kyle Walker to avoid Gladbach's high line - not much to report other than that.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 6/10 - A very quiet game as most of City's play went through the opposite full back. Nothing to complain about, though, as he marshalled the Foals' left side well.

John Stones (CB) - 8/10 - A rock at the heart of City's defence and picked out some brilliant passes into midfielders to set his side away, including starting the move for the second goal.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 7/10 - Did what he had to do to perfection, making three ball recoveries and keeping Gladbach's attackers quiet all night.

Joao Cancelo (LB) - 7/10 - Solid at the back, rarely missing a tackle, and influential when stepping into midfield, spraying the ball around and making City tick.

2. Midfielders

Rodri (DM) - 7/10 - Another stoic performance from the Spaniard. Protected his back line brilliantly and did the simple things perfectly, achieving a pass accuracy of 95%.

Bernardo Silva (CM) - 7/10 - Very much like an excitable puppy in Guardiola's midfield. Didn't stop running and produced quality all over the field, linking up play and driving forward.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - 8/10 - Fantastic movement which Gladbach simply failed to track, allowing him to run in score City's second. Showed wonderful creativity as well, making some excellent touches to move the ball forward through midfield.

3. Forwards

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 7/10 - Looked sharp and dangerous throughout, giving Ramy Bensebaini a torrid time. Created a couple of glorious chances and grabbed the assist for City's opener.

Kevin De Bruyne (CF) - 9/10 - Constantly dropped deep, often even taking up a position at right back (as you do) to spread the ball around. Tremendous quality all round and capped it all off with a stunner to open the scoring.

Phil Foden (LW) - 7/10 - Rounded off another fluid, creative and committed performance with a phenomenal assist for Gundogan's goal, rightly described by Martin Keown as "poetry in motion."

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Yann Sommer (GK) - 6/10 - Played quite well, making several decent stops to deny the opposition. Had very little chance with either goal, though - in fact, had virtually no chance.

Stefan Lainer (RB) - 5/10 - Was pinned back by Foden for most of the game and struggled to contain the Englishman.

Matthias Ginter (CB) - 7/10 - A good defensive outing, making several tackles and clearances, and was relatively unfazed by City's high press - often finding the likes of Lars Stindl in space with great passes.

Nico Elvedi (CB) - 5/10 - Did a fairly good job in tracking the mazy runs of his opposition, but in the end City's quality was too much for the Swiss international. Might have done better to cut out Foden's pass for the second goal.

Ramy Bensebaini (LB) - 4/10 - Had a very tough job against Mahrez, who clearly fancied it on the night. Managed to show the Algerian onto his right foot once - and that's it...

6. Midfielders

Denis Zakaria (CM) - 5/10 - Looked powerful in the centre of the pitch, putting himself about a bit and making a few challenges on City players, but just couldn't cope with the fluidity of Guardiola's side and, in the end, did little to stifle attacks.

Florian Neuhaus (CM) - 6/10 - Some really good progressive passing, with an accuracy of 93%, to impressively play past City's press but was often caught out defensively. His positioning left a lot to be desired for both goals.

Lars Stindl (AM) - 6/10 - Worked hard throughout, trying to help out his defensive colleagues. Was his side's creator in chief, doing well to find pockets of space but supplied just two key passes.

7. Forwards

Jonas Hofmann (RW) - 4/10 - Was fantastically energetic, and tried his upmost to influence the game but to no avail. Was just overshadowed by the quality of his opposition.

Breel Embolo (ST) - 6/10 - Provided a good outlet for his side, reliably holding up play. Just wasn't clinical enough when it mattered most, missing a couple of good opportunities in the first half.

Marcus Thuram (LW) - 5/10 - Showed glimpses of his talent, but failed to impact proceedings at all, only shooting once and creating one opportunity for Embolo throughout.
