Two of the Premier League's most in-form sides of 2022 clash at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon, as Manchester City host Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola's men will be desperate for a victory to get the midweek mayhem that preceded this fixture out of mind. Coming so close to qualifying for the Champions League final, the Cityzens somehow let a 5-3 aggregate lead slip in the final stages of Wednesday's semi-final second leg as Real Madrid instead booked their tickets for Paris.

They have, however, been in ruthless Premier League form of late, keeping Liverpool at bay courtesy of a run of six victories and two wins in their last eight outings.

Newcastle come into this weekend looking a very strong outfit as well, having lost their first league game in five as Liverpool earned a 1-0 win at St James' Park last time out; with four consecutive victories prior to that result, this fixture promises to be a very intriguing clash.

Here's 90min's preview of it.

Manchester City team news

Having been forced off in the second half of Manchester City's trip to Madrid, Kyle Walker will likely join John Stones on the sidelines for this clash.

Elsewhere, Guardiola's squad looks in good shape, although we could see some rotation among the forward line after a draining week.

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe has a few more absentees to contend with. Fabian Schar was the latest to pick up a knock after being withdrawn against Liverpool last time out, and will join Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis and Ryan Fraser in missing the action this weekend.

There is some very encouraging news for the Magpies, however, in that both Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson have resumed training and could both be set to at least be featured in the matchday squad on Sunday.

Manchester City vs Newcastle prediction

It's going to be a monumental struggle for the Cityzens to bounce back from the heartbreak they suffered on Wednesday and produce the kind of football they have done throughout the campaign to see off a rejuvenated Newcastle.

Having said that, Guardiola's men still have so much to play for and simply must win each game with a monstrous machine snapping at their ankles with each passing matchweek - the thought of conceding the title-race initiative to Liverpool should be motivation enough.

The Magpies will be a big test for the hosts but with the quality in their ranks, City should get the job done.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle
