Manchester United 1-0 West Ham (AET): Player ratings as extra-time McTominay strike settles FA Cup tie

Manchester United booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night, with Scott McTominay's extra-time strike giving them a 1-0 win over West Ham.

The visitors were happy to sit deep and soak up United's pressure early on, registering just one shot and 30% possession in the first half. Despite the home side's dominance, chances were few and far between with Victor Lindelof going closest with a header.

Things continued in the same vein after the break and with neither side able to break the deadlock, the game went to extra time. Seven minutes into this additional period, substitute McTominay grabbed the game's first and only goal, firing home a snapshot from inside the box.

United will find out who they will face in the quarter-finals on Thursday evening, with Bournemouth the only other side to confirm their place in the hat so far.

MANCHESTER UNITED

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Dean Henderson (GK) - 6/10 - West Ham gave him a ludicrously easy evening, having just one shot which he was forced to save.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - 6/10 - His attacking shortcomings are exposed in games like this. With West Ham sitting back he offered little in the final third. Defended well.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - 7/10 - Came close to opening the scoring with a header in the first half. West Ham gave him little to think about defensively.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - A few clumsy moments defensively but nothing too shocking. Pinged a few good passes into midfield.

Alex Telles (LB) - 7/10 - United's main creator in the first half. He combined particularly well with Martial and delivered from set pieces.

2. Midfielders

Nemanja Matic (CM) - 7/10 - Operated fairly effectively from deep, picking some precise passes.

Fred (CM) - 6/10 - Far too conservative in his passing most of the time. Completed 98 passes in total with only two being key passes, which is pretty mental.

Donny van de Beek (AM) - 6/10 - Everything was a little bit too safe. Only misplaced a handful of passes but did not create anything of note.

3. Forwards

Mason Greenwood (RW) - 6/10 - Stole the show in a dull first half with a fine piece of skill. Struggled to break down West Ham's disciplined defence.

Anthony Martial (ST) - 6/10 - Kept the Hammers' defence guessing by varying his movement and did not misplace a single pass in the first half, but missed a few good chances as the game went on.

Marcus Rashford (LW) - 7/10 - Had a slow start. After that he tried his best to make something happen, being direct in his dribbling whenever he got the ball. Also assisted the winner.

4. Substitutes

Scott McTominay - 8/10 - The match winner. He finished like prime Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from inside the box.

Bruno Fernandes - 6/10 - Added some guile to the United attack.

Edinson Cavani - 6/10 - Led the line effectively after coming on.

Luke Shaw - 6/10 - Did not do anything wrong.

Brandon Williams - 6/10 - Will be pleased to receive a rare run out. Did not have too much to do though.

WEST HAM

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Lukasz Fabianski (GK) - 8/10 - Made a brilliant save to touch a deflected Lindelof header onto the post in the first half. Remained alert in the second period, getting low to block Rashford one-on-one. Could do nothing about the goal. Denied Martial from the last kick of the game.

Vladimir Coufal (RB) - 6/10 - Uncharacteristically wasteful in possession early on. Looked more comfortable in the second half as one of the three centre-backs.

Craig Dawson (CB) - 7/10 - His good form continued as he put in a number of key blocks all game long. Perhaps should have nicked it in normal time with a late flicked header.

Angelo Ogbonna (CB) - 5/10 - Blocked a goal-bound Martial effort brilliantly early on, but in doing so injured his ankle and was forced off.

Aaron Cresswell (LB) - 5/10 - Forced to defend more than he would be accustomed to of late, but still got into crossing positions in rare forays forward. Restricted once he was moved to centre-back.

6. Midfielders

Declan Rice (DM) - 7/10 - Forced to spend a lot of time without the ball, but used it well when he did have it. Typically industrious off the ball, biting into challenges and sitting deep to help the defence. Gave the ball away in the lead up to the decisive goal, though.

Mark Noble (DM) - 6/10 - Looked his age at times as he chugged about the midfield. Two good moments for comedy value as he waved to Ian Wright in the stands and barged Van de Beek as he took a throw in.

Tomas Soucek (AM) - 6/10 - Not his usual influential self, but grew into the game in the second period. Unfortunately his poor header fell to Rashford who teed up McTominay for the winner.

7. Forwards

Jarrod Bowen (RW) - 6/10 - Spent a lot of time backing up Coufal down the right, but did have one opportunity as he was slipped in through the middle, although came to nothing. Withdrawn at half-time to facilitate a more defensive shape.

Andriy Yarmolenko (CF) - 5/10 - West Ham's lack of depth up top was laid bare as the Ukrainian winger started up top. Didn't really get into the game, picked up a knock early in the second half and was forced off following a cumbersome challenge from Maguire.

Pablo Fornals (LW) - 4/10 - A very quiet evening for the Spaniard. Wasted a good chance to slip Rice in as West Ham tried to build ahead of steam in the second half. Hooked for Benrahma.

8. Substitutes

Issa Diop - N/A - Typically took a whack to the head after coming off the bench and had to be withdrawn as a concussion substitute at half-time.

Ryan Fredericks - 6/10 - Introduced at half-time for the stricken Diop to play right wing-back.

Ben Johnson - 7/10 - Got straight into the game, getting the Hammers up the pitch with his runs and putting in decent crosses.

Ademipo Odubeko - 5/10 - The youngster and former Man Utd man replaced Yarmolenko. Made some nice touches but was as isolated as the man he came on for.

Said Benrahma - 6/10 - Introduced late on in place of Fornals. Looked dangerous but perhaps didn't have long enough to have an effect.

Manuel Lanzini - N/A - Six subs? That's insane. Actually came on for Odubeko in extra time. Has a game ever had two subs, subbed?! Strange one.
