The Manchester United team that should start against West Ham in the FA Cup
Manchester United quickly return to action in the FA Cup on Tuesday night, with a resurgent West Ham led by David Moyes the visitors to Old Trafford in an enticing fifth round clash.
The FA Cup offers a good opportunity for United to end the 2020/21 campaign with some silverware and ensure the current trophy drought does not extend to a fourth season, especially now that Manchester City are starting to pull away in the Premier League title race.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be well aware of that and won this trophy himself as part as the treble in 1999, so he appreciates the importance and history of the competition.
It is also important that United bounce back from the disappointment of two points dropped against Everton after conceding a 95th minute equaliser over the weekend when the game was all but won.
Here’s a look at the starting XI the United boss could pick…
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Dean Henderson (GK): David de Gea’s errors in Saturday’s Everton draw were costly, but Henderson was always likely to come into the team for this one, having played in both previous rounds against Watford and Liverpool.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB): United don’t generally have many options at right-back at the moment, which more or less makes AWB an automatic starter. Has been much improved going forward this season.
Victor Lindelof (CB): Brought the ball forward out of defence with purpose at the weekend and doubts over Eric Bailly’s fitness will likely see him stay in the side.
Harry Maguire (CB): No doubt a popular character in the dressing room and a perfectly adequate centre-back, but the £80m club captain still isn’t the decisive leader and on-field presence that United need him to be and that was on show against Everton.
Luke Shaw (LB): The left-back has been such a resurgent force in recent weeks it makes little sense to risk resting him against an opponent that will pose a danger. Solskjaer has Alex Telles at his disposal should he decide to go down that path, though.
2. Midfielders
Scott McTominay (CM): Looked to have scored the winner against Everton until the late defensive calamity and goals have been an important addition to his game this season. He has found the net five times in his last seven appearances at Old Trafford.
Fred (CM): Paul Pogba limped out of Saturday’s draw with what appeared to be a thigh injury and is a doubt for this one. He was replaced by Fred then and is likely to be again if he isn’t fit in time.
Bruno Fernandes (AM): Has just been through his least effective spell as a United player and yet still scored a stunner against Everton, got a goal and two assists against Southampton, and scored the winner in the last round of the FA Cup against Liverpool.
3. Forwards
Marcus Rashford (RW): Looks infinitely more comfortable and effective on the left but could return to the right flank for an attacking reshuffle.
Edinson Cavani (ST): Soon to be 34, the Uruguayan gives United shape and purpose as the first line of defence and is always a dangerous threat in the penalty area. He is also one of the most naturally fit players in the squad.
Anthony Martial (LW): Could return to the starting XI after a spell of poor form. Scored twice off the bench against Southampton but that wasn’t enough to convince Solskjaer he should play at all against Everton and was left among the subs.
