Manchester United to offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer new £30m contract regardless of trophies

Manchester United remain determined to offer manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new contract and are not deterred by the boss' lack of silverware since joining the club.

Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy as United manager and missed out on what will likely be his final chance to win a domestic title this season when his United side crashed out of the FA Cup quarter-final at the hands of Leicester City.

With the Premier League already seemingly on its way to the other side of Manchester, United's hopes for a trophy this season will rest on the Europa League, and while club officials obviously want to win it, ESPN state that Solskjaer's future does not depend on success in the competition.

When he first joined the club, United were clear that they saw this as a transitional period, and those in the boardroom have seen enough progress in both the team's performance and culture to feel as though he deserves a new deal.

Solskjaer has a little over 12 months remaining on his current deal and he is not thought to be worried about his future. United are confident that he wants to stay and want to avoid the unnecessary speculation that would come with him entering the final year.

While ESPN say talks over a new contract are set to take place in the near future, the Mirror predict that Solskjaer is set to be rewarded with a three-year deal worth up to £30m at the end of the season. The new terms constitute quite the pay-rise from his previous £7.5m a year.

The reports add that Solskjaer has also been reassured that he will retain his title of 'manager', rather than 'head coach', and his influence has been rewarded with a major role in the club's recruitment process.

The boss has the power to veto any transfers at Old Trafford and is one of just two people with that power, the other being the head of recruitment at the club.

Solskjaer was heavily involved in the hiring of directors John Murtough and Darren Fletcher and has spoken to both about the direction of the club.

United know that Solskjaer inherited a sinking ship and they have been impressed with his ability to turn things around. He has helped the club re-establish themselves as one of England's elite, and club officials have also been delighted with his work with the squad away from the pitch.

At one point, trophies will be seen as a measure of success, but United believe there are bigger priorities at the minute and believe Solskjaer is the right man to keep moving them in the right direction.
