Marcus Rashford has hit back at criticism of his withdrawal from international duty with England in March.

The Manchester United forward was heavily critiqued for his decision to travel to the US after dropping out of England duty back in March. Gareth Southgate was quick to defend the forward following his trip to New York while injured, saying: "Once he is ruled out of the squad, it's entirely up to him how he spends his time."

Speaking to the press ahead of this week's games against Malta and North Macedonia, Rashford has come out in his own defence of the trip and insisted that he is '100% committed' to the Three Lions.

"I need time to switch off and recover. I took a short trip, four days, then went back to do rehab and just try and get ready as soon as possible," Rashford said.

"With injuries, you can't predict when they're going to happen. Occasionally you do get impact injuries. I know that I'm committed to it [England] 100%. People are going to say what they're going to say. It doesn't really bother me."

Rashford was one of England's standout performers during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, scoring three goals at the competition as the Three Lions made the quarter-finals - being knocked out by eventual finalists France.

The forward continued that form into the rest of the 2022/23 season at club level, scoring 30 goals for Man Utd throughout the course of the campaign.
