Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to tell the German national team to reinstate centre-back Jerome Boateng in their squad, after suffering a humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of Spain.

The 33-year-old was forced into international retirement by Joachim Low back in March 2019, after the Germany coach declared he would not be picking the Bayern star in the future - along with fellow defender Mats Hummels and domestic teammate Thomas Muller.

All three cast-out stars have since gone on to recapture their impressive form of old, with Muller and Boateng lifting the Champions League with Bayern over the summer.

Many German supporters are keen to see Boateng, in particular, reinstated into the international setup amid the country's defensive shortcomings. One of these protestors is Arsenal man Ozil, who used Twitter to vent his frustration at the ex-Manchester City defender's exclusion, pleading for the national team to 'take Boateng back.'

And judging by their display on Tuesday evening, the attacking midfielder has a point.

Die Mannschaft headed into the match at the top of League A Group 4 in the Nations League, but they were put to the sword in devastating fashion by La Furia Roja, who scored three goals in either half to humble the 2014 World Cup champions.

It was a disastrous 90 minutes of football, and it has raised serious doubts over the judgement of coach Low, who has struggled to replicate his heroics of lifting the most prestigious trophy in world football six years ago.

Boateng was a key figure in that Germany side, and he excelled in the 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final, putting in an exemplary performance against the might of Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain.

Low clearly felt that after the disappointing showing at the 2018 World Cup, it was time to move on from the old guard which had brought him so much success in the past, and to pass the torch to the group of upcoming youngsters.

So far, the starlets, including Leeds defender Robin Koch, have done little to prove they can adequately replace the Bayern legend.
