MLS goals of week 2 - ranked
Major League Soccer action is in full swing. Week 2 of the 2022 campaign saw players at their best, scoring phenomenal goals and defying the odds. LA Galaxy player Efrain Alvarez shut down the party in Charlotte FC's home opener with a jaw dropping strike, while Yimmi Chara managed a second consecutive bicycle kick.
Here’s all you need to know about this week’s edition…
1. Efrain Alvarez (vs. Charlotte FC)
Efrain Alvarez shut down Charlotte FC’s party with a phenomenal strike. The winger silenced supporters after completing a run from the left to reach the 18-yard box and curl the precise shot over Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. The ball hit the right post at the perfect angle before finding the back of the net.
His efforts have not gone unnoticed as head coach Greg Vanney has labeled Efrain as a 'super talented player'.
2. Yimmi Chara (vs. LAFC)
Yimmi Chara has done it again. The Portland Timbers forward scored a second stunning bicycle kick goal, this time against Los Angeles FC.
After an initial cross deflected off of LAFC defender Mamadou Fall, Chara set himself up inside the box to manage a perfectly timed chilena and send the ball into the top left corner. Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau dove to make the save, but there was no stopping Chara’s efforts.
3. Lucas Zelarayan (vs. San Jose Earthquakes)
Lucas Zelarayan is unstoppable. The player scored twice against the San Jose Earthquakes to earn his team a draw.
While his second goal may have made the biggest difference in the match, his first left supporters stunned. The midfielder fired the shot from almost 20-yards out, directly into the upper right corner. Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made the dive, but there was nothing he could do to save that strike.
Zelarayan has scored three times for the Crew in 2022, and 21 overall in 50 appearances for the team.
4. Lewis Morgan (vs. Toronto FC)
The Scottish player scored a hat-trick against Toronto FC to lead the New York Red Bulls to their second consecutive win of the season. Morgan managed all three goals before the halftime whistle, giving the Red Bulls the necessary confidence to finish out the game comfortably.
It was his first goal, however, that we are ranking as this week’s third. A swift pass by Patryk Klimala allowed Morgan to center himself inside the box, and perfectly time the strike into the right corner of the goal.
5. Ethan Finlay (vs. Inter Miami)
The midfielder had a dream start to his Austin FC career, coming off the bench against Inter Miami to score two goals. His debut is now one for the books, especially after his second strike.
After making a run on the right, Finley made his way inside the box before firing the shot past Miami goalkeeper Clément Diop and into the opposite corner of the net. His extra time strike sealed Austin’s 5-1 victory, and helped the team break the MLS record for most goals scored in the first two games of the season.
