Mohamed Salah makes Liverpool history with record-breaking Anfield goal against Brentford
Ian Rush, Roger Hunt, Kenny Dalglish. The list of legendary figures to call Anfield home over the years is endless.
Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard, Ian St John. Yet, no one in the history of Liverpool's famous home ground has ever enjoyed a scoring streak as long as Mohamed Salah's.
Laying the ball off to Fabinho on the edge of Brentford's box, Salah buzzed towards the back post. Rico Henry matched Salah's burst over the first few steps but slowed as Fabinho swept a pass out to Virgil van Dijk on the other side of the area. Yet, at that very moment, Salah accelerated, hurtling into the six-yard area to bundle the ball just about over the line.
Salah's strike put Liverpool 1-0 up on Saturday but it had far more significance than the opener in a meeting between fifth and ninth in the Premier League. By scoring his 100th goal at Anfield, Salah had become the first Liverpool player to ever find the net in nine successive home games.
Luis Suarez, Michael Owen, Kevin Keegan. Since Everton made a stand against John Houlding's lofty rent demands and moved to the other side of Stanley Park, inadvertently prompting the formation of their greatest rivals Liverpool in 1892, no player has ever scored in as many as nine consecutive appearances at Anfield.
Not John Aldridge, not John Toshack, not Harry Chambers.
Suarez had previously held the joint record of successive scoring appearances at Anfield, finding the night eight times between April 2013 and January 2014 as he unmistakably peaked during his final Premier League campaign.
Gordon Hodgson also racked up goals in eight straight outings on the red half of Merseyside, plundering his tally during the 1927/28 season.
Hodgson is one of only eight players to ever score a century of goals at Anfield - finishing with an unholy tally of 159. 'Sir Roger' Hunt - knighted by Liverpool's fans if not the monarchy - rattled in 173 home goals for his club on either side of winning England's only World Cup in 1966. Liverpool's all-time leading scorer Rush may boast an insurmountable 185 Anfield goals, but he never enjoyed a purple patch as deeply violet as the run Salah is on.
Fittingly, Salah's scoring sequence began against Anfield's first inhabitants, Everton. Back in February, Liverpool's leading light opened the scoring seconds after James Tarkowski clattered the woodwork with a header. Salah also nabbed two goals in the 7-0 rout of Liverpool's other chief rivals Manchester United during this run.
Salah put Liverpool 2-0 up against Real Madrid the following week before watching his side crumble to an astonishing 5-2 collapse in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 - Liverpool's only defeat during Salah's goal glut.

After failing to convert a penalty against Arsenal in a thrilling 2-2 draw in April - though he did the net from open play that day - Jurgen Klopp openly discussed the possibility of taking his star forward off spot kicks. The pair came to the conclusion that Salah would retain his place as Liverpool's chief taker, a decision that was rewarded with successive successful penalties at home to Tottenham and Fulham.
The opener against Brentford also ensured that Salah has notched up 30 goals across all competitions for Liverpool for the third season on the spin. This hotly impressive achievement has been underpinned by Salah's home form in 2023; this calendar year, 11 of Salah's last 14 goals for Liverpool have been at Anfield.
John Barnes, Billy Liddell, Fernando Torres. Countless iconic figures have frequently found the net at Anfield over the years. But none can match Mo Salah.
