The 45 goals scored by Premier League clubs this weekend is a new record for a 10-match gameweek.

The previous record of 44 was set on gameweek 2 of the behind-closed-doors 2020/21 season and tied on gameweek 34 of the 2022/23 campaign.

Gameweek 19 of the 2021/22 season saw teams combine for 45 goals, but three of those games were initially postponed due to Covid-19 outbreaks and played at a later date, so do not count towards this record. There were also 53 goals scored on gameweek 42 of the inaugural 1992/93 season but this came when the Premier League featured 22 teams instead of 20.

The record-breaking weekend began at Goodison Park where Everton snatched a late 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday's early kick-off - Jarrad Branthwaite's stoppage-time header ensuring Richarlison's brace against his former employers was worth just a solitary point.

There were then 17 goals in the three 3pm matches - Newcastle United drew 4-4 at home to Luton Town in the pick of the action, while Brighton & Hove Albion hammered rivals Crystal Palace 4-1 and Burnley came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Fulham. Aston Villa went on to thrash Sheffield United 5-0 at Bramall Lane in the late kick-off.

Sunday saw the lowest-scoring game take place, with Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest playing out a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium. Elsewhere, Chelsea were beaten 4-2 at home by Wolves, Manchester United romped to a 3-0 win against West Ham United and Arsenal earned a crucial 3-1 victory against league-leaders Liverpool.

The action rounded off on Monday night at the Gtech Community Stadium where Manchester City came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1, with Phil Foden's hat-trick clincher taking the division's total haul to 45 for gameweek 23.

The Premier League returns for gameweek 24 this Saturday with Man City hosting Everton at lunchtime on Saturday. The pick of the action comes on Sunday when Arsenal travel to West Ham and Aston Villa host Man Utd, before Crystal Palace host fellow strugglers Chelsea on Monday night.
