Newcastle United are synonymous with their famous black and white stripes, but the north east club have also produced some absolute beauties when it comes to away kits.

There have also been a few horror shows though, particularly the 2009/10 edition where adidas decided to rub salt into Newcastle wounds following their relegation to the Championship by producing a bright yellow and pale yellow striped number. Eye-catching to say the least.

But let's banish those horrendous memories and focus on the far more aesthetically pleasing editions of the Magpies' best away kits of all time.

10. adidas 2006/07

Newcastle went with one of their more unique away kit colour combinations of maroon and navy blue here and it didn't let them down.

The gold trim is a nice touch and it's hard to go wrong with the northern rock sponsor.

2006/07 was the first season after Alan Shearer retired, with the legendary striker finishing on 206 goals for his boyhood side. It was also the last campaign before Mike Ashley took over. Not a great trade for fans in the north east, but at least they had this top away kit to soften the blow.

9. Umbro 1983/85

If you can manage to avert your eyes from the minuscule shorts then you'll realise the unique silver away kit donned by Newcastle in the mid-'80s was actually pretty stylish.

The shimmering silver shirt was worn by the likes of Kevin Keegan, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley. Unfortunately, just not all at the same time.

It wasn't the best period in the club's history, with the Magpies finishing third in the old Second Division during its first year in action, but it did have the honour of marking Keegan's final season in football.

8. Puma 2019/20

Last season's dark green attire offered something a little different to the normal kits Newcastle fans are used to seeing their heroes wear on trips away from St James' Park.

The simplistic design was distinctive in comparison to their usual more busy away strips.

The campaign wasn't the most memorable though as Newcastle finished 13th, comfortably above the relegation zone but a long way off the European places.

The 2008/09 season was certainly one to forget for everyone connected to Newcastle. Relegation from the Premier League ended their 16-year spell in the top tier of English football and was the first taste of just how bad things would get under the ownership of Ashley.

A fallout between Keegan and the board led to the club legend's resignation as manager. Chris Hughton took over as caretaker but an awful run of form led to the surprise appointment of Joe Kinnear, whose previous management job was all the way back in 2004.

Even Shearer couldn't save them after he was appointed as temporary manager with eight games to go and the Championship beckoned. Their away kit was nice though at least. A clean, bold blue design with adidas' iconic three stripes.

Who doesn't love a white kit?

The oversized collar leaves many, many questions unanswered and prevents this particular away strip from being further up in the rankings, but bar that adidas got everything pretty much spot on.

Sponsors can make or break football kits and the 'Newcastle Brown Ale' one seen here is up there with the most iconic of all time.

5. adidas 1998/99

The 'Newcastle Brown Ale' sponsor was already on the shirt for this one and adidas opted against ruining it with a ridiculously large collar.

It was the last season in the reign of Kenny Dalglish, who lost his job part-way through the campaign and was replaced by Ruud Gullit. The Dutchman couldn't improve the Magpies' fortunes though as they lost in the FA Cup final and finished 13th for the second consecutive year.

The away kit looked similar to a Chelsea home strip but the blue and yellow worked well for the Toon too.

4. Asics 1993/95

There might be a reason that Asics don't make football shirts anymore, but we can't see it.

This brave kit is reminiscent of the bottom of a swimming pool - and Manchester City's new home kit, come to think of it - but who doesn't love the sight of that?

It was actually worn by two visiting away sides at St James' Park after Tottenham and Athletic Club both failed to bring a suitable change of attire.

3. Puma 2018/19

Just sneaking on to the podium is this stunning stripy number. The 2018/19 season was the final campaign in Rafael Benitez's three-year spell on Tyneside and Puma made it a memorable one.

A winning blend of maroon and navy blue made a reappearance and it lived up to hopes and expectations. The gold sponsor and white shorts topped it off and provided some spark in an otherwise uneventful year.

Although the 'ntl' sponsor slightly tarnishes this kit, it's a worthy silver medallist. The clean-cut design ensures it stands out as one of the classiest in Newcastle's history.

An uncomplicated, all-blue affair, the shirt was worn by the likes of Nolberto Solano, Laurent Robert and Gary Speed.

It's best remembered for making an appearance at the Stadium of Light in February of that campaign when United defeated local and fiercest rivals Sunderland there.

The away strip for the 1995/96 season is undoubtedly the best kit that Newcastle have ever worn on the road.

This was the first instalment of the Magpies' maroon and navy blue combination and remains the best to date.

They couldn't quite do it justice, finishing the Premier League season four points behind Manchester United in second place, but it certainly wins this competition hands down.
