Exclusive - Newcastle United's bid to appoint Eddie Howe as manager has stalled after they failed to reach agreement with his number two Jason Tindall, 90min understands.

Howe has been in talks since midweek and it is understood that, having been offered the job, his terms in principle are agreed.

However, 90min has been told by sources with knowledge of the situation that Newcastle were keen to appoint Howe first and do any deals for staff later.

Howe has insisted that he wants a number of his former backroom staff to join him in the north east. Some of those can wait, but he would not entertain signing his deal without Tindall on board.

Tindall is a free agent after departing Bramall Lane in the summer, and Howe has made it clear that he will not take up his post without him.

Now, 90min have been told that Newcastle's opening offer to Tindall is 'way-off' what he expected and he rejected the terms out-of-hand.

Upon learning of the rejected contract from Tindall, Howe made it clear to Newcastle's new owners that he would not be coming without his good friend. As a result, the whole deal is in doubt, with both Howe and Tindall shocked by Newcastle's failure to offer appropriate terms.

Howe has not walked away as he still wants to take the job. As it stands he will not sign, but it is hoped that new terms for Tindall will be forthcoming over the remainder of the weekend.

Newcastle have already confirmed that current interim boss Graeme Jones will be part of any new management team going forward- although he also made it clear in his news conference on Friday that he wanted a prominent role, and would not be in attendance to mereley 'pick up cones'.

Newcastle sources would not comment on the talks with Howe or Tindall, but they remain confident that their next manager will be confirmed 'very soon'.
