Newcastle vs Arsenal: Complete head-to-head record
- Newcastle and Arsenal have a long history dating back to the 1890s
- Arsenal have enjoyed more success in this famous fixture
- Olivier Giroud is the top scorer in Premier League meetings
Newcastle United and Arsenal's football history dates all the way back to 1893, when the two sides first clashed in a League Division Two game.
The Gunners were known as Woolwich Arsenal back then, with the first meeting between these two great English footballing institutions yielding a 2-2 draw. Fast forward through the years and they are two of the best supported clubs in the country, steeped in history and tradition.
Their rivalry has never really been too intense - geographically they are at opposite ends of the country - but there's no disputing that they harbour the same ambitions; to compete with and be one of the top teams in the country.
Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, Arsenal have come out on top in the majority of their meetings, and there's been plenty of entertaining matches to live long in the memory.
Memorable Games
Arsenal 2-3 Newcastle - September 1994
Back in the mid-1990s, Newcastle were one of the Premier League's most exciting teams, spearheaded by a strike partnership of Andrew Cole and Peter Beardsley.
The latter was on top form when the Magpies visited Highbury in September 1994, when Kevin Keegan was in the midst of assembling a side capable of challenging Manchester United for the title.
Beardsley bagged a brace to put Newcastle 2-1 up, scoring either side of a Tony Adams goal, before Ruel Fox sealed the deal in the days when only three substitutes were named. Ian Wright scored a late consolation for the Gunners but it was too little, too late.
Arsenal 5-0 Newcastle - December 2000
Known nowadays for his penchant for drinking Cobra Bombs, there was once a time when Ray Parlour was a top Premier League midfielder.
Never a prolific scorer, Parlour was more of a hard-working, creative midfielder who always gave 100% to the cause. But his crowning glory in front of goal came during Arsenal's romping 5-0 win over Newcastle in December 2000.
The Romford-Pele scored a hat-trick in front of his home supporters, with some guy called Thierry Henry also on the scoresheet. Nwankwo Kanu was the other player to grab a goal on what was a terrific night for Arsene Wenger's side.
Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal - February 2011
In one of the Premier League's greatest ever comebacks, Newcastle roared back from 4-0 down at half-time to grab a draw in a pulsating St James' Park clash.
Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and Robin van Persie had Arsenal 3-0 up inside ten minutes, before Van Persie extended the lead further. But a needless red card for Abou Diaby, dished out for shoving wind-up merchants Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton, turned the game on its head.
Barton bagged a brace of penalties, Leon Best got himself on the scoresheet before Tiote plundered an unstoppable left-foot volley to send the home fans, and Alan Pardew, wild.
Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle - December 2012
For those of an early Fantasy Premier League persuasion, 29 December 2012 will be a date forever remembered if Theo Walcott was your captain.
The flying-winger turned central striker scored three and set up a further two as Arsene Wenger's side got retribution for what had happened in the north east 20 months prior. Olivier Giroud netted a brace from the bench and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Lukas Podolski on the scoresheet in a game that Arsenal could have won by a greater margin.
Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal - May 2022
Arsenal's 2021/22 campaign was focused on returning to the Champions League, with an even greater emphasis on finishing above rivals Tottenham.
Needing a win at St James' to maintain their advantage, they came up against a Newcastle side who had already shown great improvements under the management of Eddie Howe. The Magpies turned in a stirring display, led by the brilliant Bruno Guimaraes in midfield.
The Brazilian delivered the nail in Arsenal's coffin, after Ben White's unfortunate own goal had set Newcastle on their way.
