Norwich 0-5 Tottenham: Player ratings as Spurs seal Champions League return
Tottenham sealed their return to the Champions League in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road on the final day of the Premier League season.
Spurs' intent was clear from the outset, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg spurning a golden chance in the early exchanges after Dejan Kulusevski pulled the ball back to the Denmark international.
He redeemed himself just minutes later, however, as he sent Rodrigo Bentancur in behind the Norwich backline. The Uruguayan had only Tim Krul to beat, but he opted to square for Kulusevski who stroked into an empty net to open the scoring for Antonio Conte's men.
The Canaries were almost gifted a route back into the contest when Eric Dier gifted possession cheaply to Milot Rashica. However, the Norwich midfielder dragged his effort inches wide of the post.
The nerves among the Spurs faithful were soon eased when Krul coughed up a howler to double Tottenham's advantage. Bentancur intercepted a loose pass from the Norwich goalkeeper before squaring for Harry Kane, with the England international directing his diving header into an unguarded net.
Krul then almost gifted the England captain his second of the afternoon when he parried Ben Davies' long-range effort into his path, although Norwich were able to scramble the ball to safety.
Spurs continued their search for a third goal to put the game beyond doubt. Heung-min Son, chasing the Golden Boot at the expense of Mohamed Salah, was denied by a brilliant reflex stop from Krul after Kane centred from the right.
Kulusevski then unselfishly squared to the South Korean after rounding Krul, but the Swede fell over in the process of playing the pass and Max Aarons recovered to clear off the goal line.
However, the January addition from Juventus sealed Champions League football for Tottenham next term with a goal that could be likened to Arjen Robben's trademark. After being threaded through by Kane down the right, the Swede shimmied inside and curled an unstoppable effort into the top far corner.
Heung-min Son then got in on the act to move level with Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race. Substitute Lucas Moura turned provider, feeding the forward with a lovely flick around the corner before Son slotted cooly beyond Krul.
Minutes later, he added his 23rd goal of the league season. After Norwich cleared a free-kick, the South Korean jinked inside before curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner beyond the reach of Krul, capping off a wonderful afternoon for Conte's side.
1. Norwich (4-2-3-1)
GK: Tim Krul - 4/10 - Awful error to gift Spurs their second of the afternoon, passing straight to Bentancur who duly squared for Kane. Redeemed himself with a string of reflex saves.
RB: Max Aarons - 7/10 - One of the few Norwich players to emerge with credit, shutting down Spurs' attacking threat down the left-hand side. Heroic sliding challenge to deny Son in the second half.
CB: Grant Hanley - 4/10 - Attracted infield which opened up acres of space for Bentancur to break into for Spurs' opener.
CB: Sam Byram - N/A - Booked for hauling down Son on the counter-attack early in the game before he was forced off through injury.
LB: Dimitrios Giannoulis - 5/10 - Got into some promising positions, but his final delivery often deserted him.
CM: Mathias Normann - 3/10 - Another player who was booked early in the first half for cynically stopping a Spurs breakaway
CM: Jacob Lungi Sorensen - 6/10 - Often dropped into the backline to make it a five for Norwich when required.
AM: Pierre Lees-Melou - 4/10 - Drove into some good areas, but he failed to combine effectively with those around him.
RW: Kieran Dowell - 3/10 - Popped up in some good areas, but he was often outmuscled by a physically superior Spurs side.
ST: Teemu Pukki - 5/10 - Made some clever runs as Norwich transitioned forward, but he was starved of service.
LW: Milot Rashica - 5/10 - Dragged an effort wide in the first half after being gifted possession by Dier and had very few sightings at goal.
SUB: Christoph Zimmerman (36' for Byram) - Hardly patched up a leaky Canaries defence given the second half onslaught from Spurs.
SUB: Tony Springett (61' for Dowell) - N/A
SUB: Lukas Rupp (72' for Lees-Melou) - N/A
2. Tottenham (3-4-3)
GK: Hugo Lloris - 5/10 - Had very little contend with throughout the afternoon given Norwich's paltry attacking play.
RCB: Davinson Sanchez - 6/10 - Has really stepped up in the absence of Cristian Romero in recent weeks, producing a sturdy defensive performance for Conte's side.
CB: Eric Dier - 5/10 - A slack pass in the first half nearly gifted Norwich an equaliser through Rashica, but it was the only blot on an otherwise perfect copybook.
LCB: Ben Davies - 6/10 - Stepped into midfield when required, drawing a decent save from Krul in the first half with a rasping effort.
RWB: Emerson Royal - 6/10 - Won the majority of his defensive duels and gave Norwich very little space on the flanks with his clever positioning.
CM: Rodrigo Bentancur - 8/10 - Man of the Match, providing two assists which Kulusevski and Kane didn't have to do much to control.
CM: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 7/10 - Commanded his midfield impressively, spurning an early chance before redeeming himself by sending Bentancur away for Spurs' opener.
LWB: Ryan Sessegnon - 6/10 - Held his defensive position really well, playing a slightly reserved role in attack.
RW: Dejan Kulusevski - 9/10 - Perfectly positioned to tap home from Bentancur's pull back, often looking a real threat in transition with his pace and power.
ST: Harry Kane - 8/10 - Looked too embarassed to celebrate his diving header to double Spurs' lead. Led the attack to his usual high standards, dropping deep when required.
LW: Heung-min Son - 9/10 - It looked as if it wasn't to be his day after being denied by Krul on countless ocassions, but his patience was rewarded with a brace to temporarily pull clear of Salah.
SUB: Lucas Moura (68' for Kulusevski) - 6/10 - Produced a deft pass which teed up Son for his first of the afternoon.
SUB: Steven Bergwijn (73' for Royal) - N/A
SUB: Harry Winks (73' for Bentancur) - N/A
