Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Laments Edouard Mendy Heroics in Goalless Draw With Chelsea

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was satisfied with his side's performance in their 0-0 draw with Chelsea, believing that the Red Devils deserved all three points on Saturday evening.

Neither side particularly threatened their opponents throughout the match, although the Red Devils did have the better chances, both of which fell to Marcus Rashford, who was denied superbly by Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

And speaking after the match, Solskjaer was positive over his team's display despite the stalemate, and was quick to praise the heroics of Chelsea's new number one.

"It's two good teams, with quality at both ends of the pitch. You could see their keeper today, he's the match winner, two fantastic saves from Marcus [Rashford] - the one in the second half was an unbelievable save.

"It was an even game, we started a bit slow and didn't really put our authority on the game. After about 20 or 25 minutes I felt that we took over and built pressure. I'm sure if that Stretford End is full, it's going to be a magic night as so many times in this stadium, because they suck that ball into the goal. We just missed that edge today."

Solskjaer was pleased with his team's defensive performance too, and lamented the two excellent saves from the goalkeeper Mendy as the key moment in the match.

"There was a couple of nice blocks there, and we felt in control. I didn't really feel at any moment that they were putting too much pressure on us, I felt in the second half we put pressure on them.

"We just didn't have that extra edge to score a goal - apart from the two chances that Marcus had, and I've just got to praise the keeper because those two saves were fantastic."

New signing Edinson Cavani almost made an instant impact with his first touch of the ball after coming on a substitute, and the Norwegian coach was impressed by the Uruguayan's cameo on Saturday.

"Yes, a nice little flick and he showed in glimpses what he's going to give us. There was another chance that Thiago Silva blocked, and he'll give us some presence in the box."

Speaking over the hectic schedule that the Red Devils face, Solskjaer appeared to ask for a bit of understanding from the supporters, and drew parallels between their two victories over Paris Saint-Germain during his tenure.

"It's going to be relentless and it's easy to be a fan, or to be me or you and to say 'he should be playing or he should be playing.' We don't know what's going on behind the scenes - they're tired, they've played loads of internationals, they're playing every three days again.

"And after Paris Saint-Germain last time, we had a big dip. This time round, we've started with a good performance - maybe we should have had three points but we didn't, but we got a point and it's something to build from."
