Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Reacts to Southampton Draw & Provides Updates on Man Utd Injuries

Manchester United missed the chance to take control of the race for the top four on Monday as they slipped to a 2-2 draw with Southampton.

The Red Devils were not at their dominant best but still looked like taking home all three points after goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial had them 2-1 up in the 97th minute, but Saints starlet Michael Obafemi bundled home from a late (late) corner to equalise, and to keep United fifth in the table.

Sealing Champions League football is still in their hands as United will play fourth-placed Leicester City on the final day of the season, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still frustrated to have missed such a good opportunity to move forward. Here's what he had to say after the game.

On Failing to Win

“Frustrating, yes, but it's part of the game as well," he said (via the club's official website). "We've had so many times where we've won the game in the last minute, and it's another test for the boys, another test on mentality.

"Can we shake this off, can we be ready for Thursday, with a positive frame of mind? As you said, we've been on a fantastic run and you can't sit down and feel sorry for yourself when it goes against you for a little while.

“Probably we didn’t deserve three points. Because Southampton are a good team and deserved to get something from the game. They played well. They are a physical, very, very fit side. They run and run, they chase and we never got the rhythm in our passing today especially after we got to 2-1. You can play better but we created chances and played some fantastic football at times. Anthony [Martial] has got two massive chances that he creates for himself and the two goals are very good.”

On Missing the Chance to Move Into 3rd

“That’s football. It is key moments. There are key moments in every game of football and that was key moment. We will take it and move onto Thursday at Selhurst Park. It's a game to focus on. This will be in the back of our heads tonight, we're disappointed but tomorrow it's all heads on Crystal Palace.

"The mentality has been brilliant. We have had a few setbacks this season. This is another challenge for us," he added (via BBC Sport).

"I am very confident in [the players'] mentality. I'm disappointed of course, but you have to take the disappointments as well as the positives. We have learned a hard lesson. We will put it right. I trust the boys in that respect."

On Luke Shaw & Brandon Williams' Injuries

Left-back Luke Shaw hobbled off after picking up an ankle injury and was replaced by young Brandon Williams, who himself was forced off late on after a nasty collision of heads with Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters.

“Luke twisted his ankle,” he added. “Hopefully, we can have some good news on him after we've done a scan.

“I can't say [really], I've not seen Brandon because he was with the medical staff and I think he was getting some stitches with a gash over his eye. So let's see how he is.”

On 'Top Class' Anthony Martial

"Anthony, I thought he was excellent today, absolutely top-class. Especially the second goal. That's how we want to play football. Fast, quick, through the pitch and then a very good finish.

“If you get a two-goal cushion, that's a different ball-game. But we scored two fantastic goals."
