Oleksandr Zinchenko's Fiancee Slams Pep Guardiola for Man City's Champions League Exit
Ukrainian presenter Vlada Sedan has opened fire on Pep Guardiola's tactics in the Champions League quarter-final defeat to Lyon, expressing bewilderment at the decision to start the crucial tie with three central defenders.
City were backed heavily to brush Lyon aside and book their place in the semi-finals in Lisbon, yet it was the French side who advanced to face Bayern Munich, after a late double from substitute Moussa Dembele secured a famous win for Rudi Garcia's team.
City have never advanced beyond the quarter-final stage in Europe under Guardiola's tutelage, despite boasting the most expensive squad in the world, and many have pointed to the manager's over-complicated tactics as a key factor in that.
Sedan - whose fiancee Oleksandr Zinchenko was left on a star-studded bench for the Lyon defeat - believes this is the case, and restrained herself as she went in studs-up on the City boss' decision to start the game with five defenders.
“You saw what happened. I'm not a football player, not a coach, not a critic or an analyst. I understand that my opinion is not authoritative," Sedan told almost 25,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel
“Perhaps I have no right to say this, and perhaps Zinchenko will forbid me. But to put it mildly, in order not to swear, this is completely Guardiola's fault.
“At such a crucial moment, using such an experimental tactic for City was a bummer. I have no right to criticise, but why play three central defenders?
"I simply have no words because to have such a line-up... look at the players City have, what a bench. Literally on a few clubs in the world can boast having such players at substitutes.”
Guardiola opted to use just two of his five available substitutes, with Zinchenko, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva among those who did not get off the bench to make an impact as City chased the game. So yeah...you can see where Sedan s coming from.
