Phil Foden withdraws from England squad following appendicitis surgery

England have confirmed that Phil Foden underwent surgery on his appendix on Sunday morning.

The Manchester City star was expected to play some part for the Three Lions against Ukraine this weekend, but he has had to withdraw from the squad following a sudden bout of appendicitis.

In a statement, England said: "Phil Foden has been ruled out of this evening's UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier with Ukraine following surgery to remove his appendix this morning.

"England manager Gareth Southgate has not called up a replacement, meaning he has 20 players to choose from after the earlier withdrawal of Reece James and Luke Shaw's suspension."

Reports claim Foden complained of feeling unwell during Saturday's training session at Tottenham's training ground.

It is now likely that Foden will miss the entirety of April and the beginning of May following surgery.

Manchester City return to action on April 1 with a crunch clash against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium. This is followed by a trip to Southampton.

A home game against Leicester is sandwiched in between both legs of Man City's UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

Following the second leg at the Allianz Arena, Man City face Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-finals. They round off April against Premier League title rivals Arsenal and then visit Fulham.

Man City open May with gammes at home to West Ham at Leeds, at which point Foden should be back in training.
