Premier League reveal shortlist for 2022/23 Young Player of the Season
By Tom Gott
Eight players have been named on the final shortlist for the 2022/23 Premier League Young Player of the Season award.
To be eligible for this prize, players must have been aged 23 or under when the season started.
It was Manchester City's Phil Foden who came out on top in 2021/22 and there's a good chance the trophy will be heading back to the Etihad Stadium as City teammate Erling Haaland has been named on the shortlist.
In his debut season in England, Haaland has broken the all-time scoring record en route to leading City towards yet another Premier League title. A compelling argument, one might say.
There is plenty of competition from the Arsenal squad, however, with three of the Gunners young core making the cut.
Current Premier League table, top scorers & upcoming fixtures
Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli are all up for the award, and deservedly so. All three have reached double figures for goals this season, with plenty of assists mixed in as well, in a glorious campaign which has blown Arsenal's expectations out of the water.
Brighton have two nominees of their own, with the in-demand midfield duo of Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo making the list.
Both have been in sensational form, attracting major interest from across Europe after a season which could still yield European football for the Seagulls. Just whether either player will still be at the AMEX this time next year remains to be seen.
Finally, fellow overachievers Newcastle United also feature on the list, with Sven Botman and Alexander Isak up for the award.
Botman made an instant impact in Newcastle's defence, which could still finish as the division's meanest, while Isak has exploded in the second half of the campaign after missing the vast majority of the first six months through injury.
Fans can vote for their preferred winner, with those votes being combined with a panel of experts to determine the eventual winner.
