The news of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool departure at the end of the 2023/24 season hit fans like a ton of bricks and shocked the entire football world in the process.
The German's iconic spell on Merseyside was always going to end at some point but the mid-season announcement came from nowhere as he explained he no longer has the energy to keep giving the job what it needs.
Having sailed into the sunset without a second Premier League title in his back pocket, Klopp, who first arrived at Anfield nine years ago, is enjoying some well-earned time away from the game after breathing fresh life into one of the biggest clubs in the world and turning them into a winning force again. Arne Slot is now reaping the rewards of the sound foundations left by the charismatic German.
Winning has become the norm for Liverpool again under Klopp and the overall Premier League table since his arrival backs that up.
Premier League table from Jurgen Klopp's time at Liverpool
Klopp became Liverpool manager on 8 October 2015, taking over from the struggling Brendan Rodgers who was dismissed for a poor start to the season having come so close to winning the Premier League title the previous campaign.
The German, who had left former club Borussia Dortmund earlier that year, arrived with Liverpool sat in tenth place eight games into the 2015/16 season, winning only three matches and scoring just ten goals.
There wasn't immediate success for Klopp at Liverpool in a league sense, but there was clear improvement in terms of style. Liverpool became far more interesting and entertaining to watch and despite still finishing as low as eighth, the Reds were the fifth-highest scorers in the 30 games he was in charge for and they were only six points away from fourth.
Position | Team | Games played | Points |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Man City | 334 | 764 |
2 | Liverpool | 334 | 705 |
3 | Arsenal | 334 | 622 |
4 | Tottenham | 334 | 609 |
5 | Man Utd | 334 | 599 |
6 | Chelsea | 334 | 591 |
7 | West Ham | 334 | 439 |
8 | Leicester | 296 | 423 |
9 | Everton | 334 | 419 |
10 | Newcastle | 296 | 392 |
11 | Crystal Palace | 334 | 390 |
12 | Southampton | 296 | 331 |
13 | Brghton | 266 | 319 |
14 | Wolves | 228 | 299 |
14 | Bournemouth | 257 | 287 |
15 | Burnley | 266 | 286 |
17 | Aston Villa | 220 | 277 |
18 | Watford | 220 | 223 |
19 | Fulham | 152 | 153 |
20 | West Brom | 144 | 137 |
As the above table shows, Liverpool were the second-best team in the Premier League during Klopp's tenure, sitting just 56 points behind Manchester City. That gap is remarkably small given Liverpool won the league just once under Klopp and Man City won it five times under Pep Guardiola.
Liverpool were the closest challengers to Man City for the majority of Klopp's time at the club, although Arsenal emerged as City's closest contender during the German's final two Premier League seasons. Liverpool were well in the 2023/24 title race but fell away in April.
Something Liverpool fans can take great pride in is their clear superiority over Manchester United, earning 106 more points than their rivals during Klopp's reign. The Red Devils have struggled effectively the entire time he was in charge of Liverpool and the German dished out some pretty hefty defeats both at Anfield and Old Trafford.
Liverpool now sit third in the entire Premier League table running from 1992/93-present day, which is one place higher than they were when he took over in 2015. There was no concluding fairytale in 2023/24, but Klopp departs Merseyside with an indisputable legacy.
