Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you'll have heard Erling Haaland is scoring quite a few goals at Manchester City this season.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker is enjoying playing for the treble-chasing Citizens, getting opportunities galore from the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden just to name a few.

But how does he compare to legends of the Premier League who set scoring records before the massive Norwegian arrived on the scene?

Here are the records for most goals scored in a season and how Haaland can break them.

What is the Premier League record for most goals scored in a season?

The record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season is held by Erling Haaland, who bagged 36 for Manchester City during 2022/23, his debut campaign in England.

The landmark was previously jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who both netted 34 in their 1993/94 and 1994/95 campaigns respectively. Those feats were set during the 1990s when the Premier League played 42 games instead of the 38-match format currently in place.

Haaland set the record for most goals scored in a 38-game season in 2022/23 with his 33rd goal of the campaign in April, overtaking Mohamed Salah's previous record of 32, before racing ahead of Shearer and Cole to sit on his own atop the pile.

Ten goals in his first six Premier League games - including two hat tricks - hinted a number of stat landmarks would fall to Erling Haaland in 2022/23 and that's exactly what happened.

The former Dortmund ace finished the season with 36 goals in the top flight, finishing off the chances so readily created by Man City's machine-like attack. It could have been more for the giant Norwegian, but his scoring touch somewhat deserted him as City wrapped up the treble regardless.

Alan Shearer - 34

Shearer is a legendary figure in the Premier League as the competition's greatest ever goalscorer.

He hit the back of the net an incredible 260 times during his spells with Blackburn and Newcastle and registered over 30 goals in three of his four Premier League seasons with the Rovers. His best return was 34, back in 1994/95, as he and strike partner Chris Sutton led Kenny Dalglish's side to the title.

He won the Golden Boot that season and remarkably defended that title for the following two years.

Andy Cole - 34

Cole was an incredibly consistent goalscorer during his prime and is behind only Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane in the all-time standings.

He only went past 20 league goals in a season once in his career, but it was a record-breaking 1993/94 term for the former England international in the Magpies' first Premier League season.

He struck 34 times up front while partnering Peter Beardsley as Newcastle scored 82 goals, two more than league winners Manchester United as they were dubbed 'The Entertainers'. Cole soon joined Man Utd, where he would win five league titles and a Champions League.

Mohamed Salah - 32

Having failed to make the grade at Chelsea during his first spell in England, Egypt international Salah made Anfield his goalscoring playground as he racked up 32 league strikes, also helping the Reds to the Champions League final.

He has since shared the Golden Boot twice - firstly with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane in 2018/19 and later with Son Heung-min in 2021/22.
