A depleted PSG were made to work incredibly hard against Angers on Friday, with a late Kylian Mbappe penalty sealing a thoroughly uncomfortable 2-1 victory.

Despite missing the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar, it was PSG who dominated proceedings early on, but they found it nearly impossible to get through Angers' resilient defence. Mauro Icardi had a good shout for a penalty turned down, but other than that moment of panic, the visitors looked relatively comfortable early on.

In fact, it was Angers who had the best chances of the first half and they finally made one count shortly before the break as Sofiane Boufal's cross was tapped home by Angelo Fulgini to give the away side a deserved lead.

PSG did have the ball in the back of the net as Ander Herrera's looping header dropped in off the post, only for the celebrations to be cut short by the offside flag.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were barely any better after the interval, but they did profit from a lapse in concentration from Angers' defence to net an equaliser through Danilo Pereira, who headed home from close range with 20 minutes to go.

The goal, coupled with some big names coming off the bench, did inject some life into PSG, but they still looked to be lacking ideas in the final third as Angers shut up shop to try and secure the point.

But, with five minutes to go, PSG were handed a penalty after VAR spotted a harsh handball, and Mbappe fired home to seal a largely undeserved victory for the Parisians.

PSG player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) - 6/10 - Powerless for the goal but made a handful of decent saves to keep the deficit down in the first half.

Colin Dagba (RB) - 3/10 - Switched off for the goal and didn't look like he fancied the battle with Boufal at all.

Thilo Kehrer (CB) - 4/10 - Just didn't seem to be aware of what was going on. Needed Kimpembe to bail him out a few times but couldn't get away with it for the goal.

Presnel Kimpembe (CB) - 6/10 - Too slow to react for the goal but didn't really deserve to give up a clean sheet. Made some excellent slide tackles but was punished for a lapse in concentration.

Abdou Diallo (LB) - 3/10 - Caught out of position time and time again. No surprise that the opener came down his side. Pushed far too high and had no idea where Angers' wingers were.

2. Midfielders

Danilo Pereira (DM) - 5/10 - Spent more time playing as a centre-back and left PSG a man down in midfield. Took his goal well though.

Ander Herrera (CM) - 5/10 - A tricky one to rate. Did well as an advanced midfielder but his role was far too high up the pitch and he was constantly caught out. Seemed to be a tactical problem.

Marco Verratti (CM) - 5/10 - Some neat passing but caught in possession a few too many times. A little too relaxed.

3. Forwards

Rafinha (RW) - 3/10 - Quite active early on but plateaued very quickly. His lack of pace was exposed out wide and he rarely looked like scaring a full-back.

Mauro Icardi (ST) - 4/10 - Too hesitant to pull the trigger but also struggled with a lack of service. Tried to make some decent runs but almost all were wasted.

Kylian Mbappe (LW) - 5/10 - Too quiet for the majority of the game but did bag an assist and a goal.

4. Substitutes

Georginio Wijnaldum (CM) - 6/10 - Brought some much-needed energy in midfield and made a decent impact in defence as well.

Juan Bernat (LB) - 5/10 - Flew down the left wing in search of more goals but his crossing was a little sloppy.

Julian Draxler (RW) - 6/10 - Added another body in attack and the pressure paid off.

Achraf Hakimi (RB) - 6/10 - Asked problems of Angers' defence.

Eric Ebimbe (LW) - N/A - A late arrival.
