Southampton striker Danny Ings will undergo a scan on his knee tomorrow after being substituted off late in the Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Ings scored the Saints' fourth of the day in the 4-3 win, but was taken off with just five minutes remaining after a challenge from Villa's Ahmed El Mohamady which left the forward holding his knee.

Though he was able to return to his feet, Ings was replaced by Shane Long for the final few minutes with both the player and his coach Ralph Hasenhuttl apparently wary of a fresh injury concern.

Ings, who twice suffered serious knee injuries which kept him out of action for the best part of two years during his time at Liverpool, will now undergo a scan to assess the extent of the damage that forced him off the pitch, according to his manager.

Speaking after the game, Hasenhuttl admitted it 'didn't look good' for the England striker.

"This is such a hard game you will also have a few touch duels - maybe some a little too tough," he said, via HampshireLive. "Ingsy's duel does not look good. It was right in front of me and we know his history with his knees. I hope he is okay.

"He was immediately shouting 'my knee! my knee!'. Hopefully this is not a bad injury. It is not swollen but we will have a look tomorrow with a scan and will let you know."

The concern over Ings puts a bitter aftertaste on an impressive performance away from home for Southampton.

The Saints went 4-0 up at Villa Park, with James Ward-Prowse in magnificent form on his 26th birthday. The midfielder scored twice and bagged the assist for Southampton's opener from Jannik Vestergaard.

Ings scored shortly before the hour, before Villa rallied for a late but ultimately fruitless comeback.
