Real Madrid have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Alphonso Davies after Bayern Munich made a fresh and 'superior' contract offer to the left-back.
Davies has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid for much of the season so far with his current deal set to expire in 2025.
The Canada international is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Allianz Arena and so transfer speculation has swirled in recent months, but that could be about to change.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that though Madrid are indeed interested in signing Davies, he has received a more lucrative offer from Bayern. Unless Los Blancos up their offer, he is expected to remain in Bavaria.
WILL THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW DELIVER?
Davies is one of five key Bayern players out of contract in 2025, with Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich also up for renewal.
There has also been growing speculation over the future of manager Thomas Tuchel with Bayern still trailing Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table and team performances regressing despite the addition and fine displays of Harry Kane.
Bayern have sought to bring in defensive reinforcements during the winter transfer window, bringing in Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur. They are also on the verge of signing Sacha Boey from Galatasaray after failing to agree deals for Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier and Paris Saint-Germain's Nordi Mukiele.
Madrid, meanwhile, look set to battle it out with Girona for La Liga's title this season, with usual rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid way off the pace.
