Real Madrid president Florentino Perez tests positive for coronavirus
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has tested positive for coronavirus, although the 73-year-old club official is not currently displaying any symptoms.
Real have confirmed that Perez will continue to be tested periodically to monitor his condition. The club have offered no further information on any potential knock-on effects at the Bernabeu.
Los Blancos coach Zinedine Zidane had also previously tested positive for the virus before the game against Alaves in La Liga just under two weeks ago. But the Frenchman was able to return to the sidelines in time for the defeat with Levante last weekend.
Real are level on points with Barcelona but trail city rivals Atletico by 10 points in La Liga’s title race. With both giants struggling this season amid the ongoing pandemic and the financial limitations preventing much needed squad overhauls at each club, Atletico have taken full advantage.
Diego Simeone steered Los Rojiblancos to the title in 2013/14 and should he do so again it would be only the second time that neither Real nor Barca have been crowned Spanish champions since 2004.
