Real Madrid's squad from last UEFA Super Cup win compared to now
- Real Madrid have won five UEFA Super Cups, with their most recent win coming in 2022
- Carlo Ancelotti named his 24-man squad for the 2024 UEFA Super Cup
- Los Blancos take on Atalanta on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. ET
Real Madrid are set to play in their ninth UEFA Super Cup, and Carlo Ancelotti's squad looks a bit different to the one that lifted the trophy just two years ago.
Even before Los Blancos take the field against Atalanta on Wednesday, Aug. 14, they have the tied-most UEFA Super Cups (5) in history with Barcelona. Just like the Champions League final, Real Madrid typically find success in the match, especially when they go against a non-Spanish side. In 2022, Carlo Ancelotti's men defeated Frankfurt to take home the trophy for the fifth time this century.
Now, as the reigning Champions League winners get ready to battle for their record sixth UEFA Super Cup, they must do so without some of their best players in the last decade. Their new squad, though, has the potential to be even more dangerous than the 2022 victors.
Here's a breakdown of the differences in Real Madrid's 2022 UEFA Super Cup winning squad compared to their 2024 UEFA Super Cup squad.

Defense:
After the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, Real Madrid's defense has not changed much throughout the recent years. Both UEFA Super Cup squads feature Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Antonio Rudiger, and Lucas Vazquez.
The one big loss for Carlo Ancelotti's side is Nacho, who decided to join Al-Qadsiah for the 2024/25 season.
Of course, the backline will be the last line of defense in front of Thibaut Courtois, who also started the 2022 UEFA Super Cup.
Midfield:
The biggest changes between Real Madrid's two recent UEFA Super Cup appearances are in the midfield. In 2022, Casemiro and Toni Kroos joined Luka Modric while Fede Valverde played on the right-wing. Casemiro, of course, would go on to leave Real Madrid for Manchester United, and Kroos retired after the 2023/24 season.
In the 2024 UEFA Super Cup, Valverde will drop down to play with Modric and Jude Bellingham.
Both squads have similar midfielders on the bench, including Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos, and Eduardo Camavinga. The one addition in the 2024 squad is Arda Guller.
Attack:
Once again, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo will feature in Real Madrid's attack, but instead of Karim Benzema, they will be joined by Kylian Mbappe. The former PSG man finally completed his transfer to Los Blancos and will likely make his debut at the 2024 UEFA Super Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti's attacking substitutes are quite different despite just the two-year gap between UEFA Super Cups. In 2022, Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, and Mariano were his only options off the bench.
Now, in 2024, he has wonderkid Endrick and Brahim Diaz, both capable of finding the back of the net should Real Madrid need a spark up top.
