Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig: Complete head-to-head record
- Real Madrid face RB Leipzig in the 2023/24 Champions League last 16
- The Spanish giants are the record winners of the European Cup
- Leipzig are aiming to reach the quarter-final for only the second time
Given RB Leipzig were only formed in 2009, meetings between the Bundesliga outfit and Real Madrid have not been a regular occurrence.
The two sides have met on just a smattering of occasions in European competition. It wasn't until the group stage of the 2022/23 Champions League campaign that the pair first faced off in competitive action.
While past meetings have been scarce, both sides boast an incredible roster of talent, with the two clubs traditionally operating under different recruitment models.
Here is the complete head-to-head record between Madrid and Leipzig.
Memorable Games
Real Madrid 2-0 RB Leipzig - September 2022
With a front three of Dominik Szoboszlai, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner, Leipzig were primed to cause Madrid problems in the first meeting between the sides in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.
However, Madrid's experienced defence stood firm, shutting out Leipzig's dynamic forwards. At the other end, patience was required for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
With the game goalless heading into the final ten minutes, Madrid's Federico Valverde popped up with a crucial opener, curling beyond a helpless Peter Gulacsi. Marco Asensio then doubled the home side's advantage in stoppage time, converting a wonderfully executed free-kick routine.
RB Leipzig 3-2 Real Madrid - October 2022
Leipzig managed a famous win over Madrid in the reverse fixture in the group stage, pulling off a 3-2 victory against the 14-time European champions.
Josko Gvardiol's close-range header put the German side in front, with Nkunku doubling Leipzig's lead with an emphatic finish that crashed off the underside of the crossbar. Within 20 minutes, Marco Rose's side had a two-goal lead, but a well-placed Vinicius Junior header would reduce the deficit before half-time.
Werner restored Leipzig's two-goal cushion with ten minutes to play, tapping in Mohamed Simakan's cross at the far post, with Rodrygo's late penalty nothing more than a consolation.
It was a result that helped ensure Leipzig's qualification for the last 16. However, they were dumped out by Manchester City in the knockout rounds. Pep Guardiola's side would go on to beat Madrid in the semi-final as well on their way to the trophy.
RB Leipzig 0-1 Real Madrid - February 2024
In the 2023/24 season, Madrid and Leipzig were paired up in the Champions League last 16. Los Blancos comfortably finished top of their group, while Die Roten Bullen qualified early but behind Manchester City as runners-up.
The first leg took place in Germany where the visitors were without Jude Bellingham, who has taken the Bernabeu by storm in his first season in Spain.
Madrid were able to deal with the England star's absence well enough as they secured a slender first-leg lead. A brilliant effort from Brahim Diaz, who cut inside and curled in wonderfully, proved enough to separate the two sides at Red Bull Arena.
