Chelsea right-back Reece James is said to be optimistic about his chances of being included in England's World Cup squad after making impressive progress in his return from a hamstring injury.

After some initial positivity, James was ruled out for up to eight weeks with a knee injury suffered against AC Milan on October 11, casting significant doubt over his chances of travelling to Qatar with the Three Lions.

James had been due to be in a knee brace for four weeks but the Evening Standard state that he is already winding down his use of the support and is ahead of schedule.

Currently in Dubai to aid his recovery, James is understood to have made good progress thus far and is now said to be feeling confident of his chances of making the squad.

There is an acceptance that James may not be ready for the early group-stage games - England kick things off against Iran on November 21 - but the Chelsea right-back believes he could have a part to play in the games that follow.

England boss Gareth Southgate has spoken with James but has put no pressure on the 22-year-old to speed up his recovery.

Southgate's final decision could hinge on the fitness of Manchester City's Kyle Walker, who is also facing a race against time to prove his fitness. The 32-year-old has been battling a groin issue since early October and is not yet fit either.
