Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock defeat to Rennes at Roazhon Park on Sunday evening.

The defeat cuts PSG's lead at the top of Ligue 1 to three points thanks to Lens 1-0 win over Auxerre on Saturday.

Despite having Lionel Messi and Neymar in the starting XI, Paris Saint-Germain largely struggled to test a stern Rennes defence in the first half.

In fact, it was Rennes who would create the better chances of the first 45. Arnaud Kalimuendo - up against his former club - was causing the PSG backline particular problems, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a smart save on the half-hour mark from around the penalty spot.

PSG tried to the turn the tide near the start of the second half when they introduced Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi.

However, those changes didn't exactly work as in the 65th minute, Rennes took the lead.

The home side would come courtesy of some equisite play from Adrien Truffert on the left flank, turning past substitute Hakimi before passing the ball to his captain Hamari Traore on the left of the penalty area. Traore would make no mistake with his first time effort on goal, drilling past Donnarumma and into the bottom corner.

That goal would wake PSG up a bit (finally). In the 70th minute they'd create their first actual chance of the game, with Messi wonderfully chipping the ball through to Mbappe on the left. The French forward, however, couldn't find the back of the net with just Steve Mandanda to beat - firing over the crossbar.

Bernat was next to have a sight of goal, as the wing-back saw a well-struck half-volley saved by Mandanda in the Rennes goal.

And that was it really. Despite having 20 odd minutes to draw level, PSG rarely threatened Rennes' goal and were deservedly beaten.
