Wales manager Robert Page has commented on Gareth Bale's decision to retire from both club and international football, stating that was 'the right time' for the legendary forward to do so.
Bale announced his retirement on Monday, bringing to an end a fantastic career which saw the wide player win five UEFA Champions League and be the catalyst for the most successful period in Wales' footballing history.
His statement on the decision retire read: "After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football.
"I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me."
Speaking to BBC Radio Wales after the announcement, Wales manager Page stated that he had a conversation with Bale on Sunday.
“Gareth messaged to say he needed a conversation, " Page explained. “I knew it was something significant, but when he announced it to me it didn’t come as a complete surprise."
“I told him I think it’s the right time to bow out. You’ve just scored in a World Cup and got everything on your CV, what you’ve done for this country is unbelievable.”
