Santos Laguna hosts 10th edition of the Guerretón
Liga MX’s Santos Laguna is gearing up for the 2023 Guerretón: an annual event hosted by the team that invites supporters to bring toys, stuffed animals and books to the stadium to be donated to underprivileged communities in Torreon, Mexico.
Though supporters can drop off their contributions in bins around the Territorio Santos Modelo and surrounding commercial establishments, a ‘shower of toys’ will take place at half-time on April 23 in the match against Querétaro that enables everyone to throw the donations into the pitch to be picked up.
Santos Laguna also propelled sponsors, business partners and commercial allies to participate in the event and donate supplies.
The tradition, created by Orlegi Sports, will celebrate its 10th edition this year. In 2022, the team collected over 21,301 toys to be distributed among the following organizations: Esc. Prim. Justo Sierra, DIF Coahuila, hijos de internos del CERESO, CRIT Durango., Banco de Alimentos, Casa Hogar Abrázame, Cáritas Gómez Palacio, Ciudad de los Niños, among others.
The Guerretón forms part of a ‘social responsibility program’ of the Guerreros de Corazón, and concurs with the team’s mission statement: “Winning by serving is the only option.”
Midfielder Santiago Muñoz previously described the team’s philosophy as unparalleled, explaining it provides a foundation way beyond the pitch.
“The philosophy that the club has is unparalleled. For me, no one else has the mentality that Santos has, and I don’t say that because I have been here since I was 14 years old, or because it is my club. I’ve visited some other clubs, I have teammates from other clubs, and there is nothing like it,” he said exclusively to 90min.
“That foundation I have, and others at this club have from working in the academy to the senior team. We always do everything to be able to help others. Here we will win by serving, a clear objective all players have present.”
