The Sounders booked their place in the knockout stage with a 2-0 victory over Minnesota United despite losing 3-1 to Necaxa in the following match. Brian Schmetzer's team finished in second place in West Group 6 behind Necaxa with the Loons finishing in last place.
LA climbed to the top of West Group 2 after a pair of victories against the likes of San Jose Earthquakes and Liga MX outfit Chivas. The Galaxy picked up three points with a 2-1 triumph over their in-state rivals in San Jose before coming out on top in penalty kicks against Chivas to add two more points.
