Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has returned to training but will be maintaining his fitness on his own as he is intent on securing a move away after a tumultuous summer.

Romero joined United in the summer of 2015 and had previously established himself as David de Gea's primary replacement between the sticks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side reached the semi-final of three distinct cup competitions last season, but despite playing in the vast majority of the ties leading up to those marquee fixtures, Romero was dropped to the bench for each one.

These examples of being overlooked, coupled with the return of Dean Henderson from an impressive loan spell at Sheffield United, led to initial reports that Romero was free to leave the club this summer. Despite being linked with several sides, including fellow Premier League outfit Everton, Romero couldn't earn a move away.

Two months into the 2020/21 campaign, Romero has now returned to training at the club according to The Sun. However, the Argentina international, who is thought to be on a weekly salary of £100,000, is reportedly training alone.

Romero's absence until November has left United's playing squad entirely unaffected because the 33-year-old was omitted from their roster registered with the Premier League. A particular source of consternation for Romero was that he supposedly discovered this via social media.

Despite the fact that his contract expires in the summer of 2021, United were demanding a fee for Romero no other club could afford, an approach which apparently left other members of the squad 'disappointed'.

Romero's final chance of leaving the club before the January transfer window evaporated when a proposed move to MLS side Inter Miami - part owned by former Manchester United player David Beckham - collapsed at the end of October.
