Stoke 1-3 Tottenham: Player Ratings as Spurs Reach Carabao Cup Semi-Finals
By Ali Rampling
Tottenham booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 win over Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Spurs took the lead after 22 minutes, Gareth Bale glancing home Harry Winks' delicate cross as Jose Mourinho's side dominated the first half.
Having hardly got out of their own half in the first 45, let alone registered a shot on target, Stoke gave a much better account of themselves in the second period, and after 53 minutes they were level, Jordan Thompson cooly side-footing Jacob Brown's cross past Hugo Lloris.
But Spurs re-took the lead with a stunning long-range effort from Ben Davies, before Harry Kane wrapped up Spurs' semi-final place nine minutes from time with a thunderous finish from close range.
Let's get into some player ratings.
STOKE
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Andy Lonergan (GK) - 6/10 - Produced three really good first-half saves to keep out Kane, Alli and then Alli again.
Danny Batth (CB) - 5/10 - Bale drifted in between Batth and Souttar and was gifted with all the time in the world as Stoke fell behind. Made an important interception early in the second half with Moura bearing down on goal
Harry Souttar (CB) - 4/10 - Gave Bale far too much time and space as he headed home, unchallenged, Spurs' opener. His attempted second-half clearance was mishit and fell to the feet of Davies as Spurs re-took the lead, and Kane got the better of him for Spurs' third.
Nathan Collins (CB) - 7/10 - Enjoyed a really great battle with Alli, making one particularly impressive block as the Spurs man fired goalwards. Looked strong, composed and assured.
2. Wing-Backs & Midfielders
Tommy Smith (RWB) - 5/10 - Pinned back by Moura and Davies in the first half, got forward a bit more in the second without ever really asking many questions of Davies. Sliced an effort wide in the dying stages.
Jordan Thompson (CM) - 7/10 - Levelled the scores in the second half with a perfectly timed back-post run, before side-footing a half-volley past Lloris. Conceded possession in the buildup to Spurs' third.
Jordan Cousins (CM) - 6/10 - Overrun in the first half but much like Stoke, Cousins turned in an improved second-half display, getting on the ball more and getting the ball forward with purpose.
Morgan Fox (LWB) - 5/10 - Limped off with injury on the half-hour mark having spent much of the first 30 minutes pinned into his own half by Bale.
3. Forwards
James McClean (LW) - 6/10 - Moved to left wing-back following the injury to Fox. Dogged and industrious, he put in a real defensive shift, but rarely had the opportunity to venture forward.
Jacob Brown (ST) - 7/10 - Left to feed off scraps in the first half but was instrumental in Stoke's second-half equaliser; winning the initial header, peeling wide and sending a terrific, teasing cross into the path of Thompson.
Tashan Oakley-Boothe (RW) - 6/10 - Playing against his former club, dropped into midfield following Fox's injury as Stoke switched to two up top. Like the whole Stoke side, turned in a much improved second-half display. Replaced after 78 minutes.
4. Substitutes
Steven Fletcher - 6/10
Nick Powell - 5/10
Sam Vokes - 5/10
TOTTENHAM
5. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Hugo Lloris (GK) - 6/10 - Hardly had a save to make, with Stoke's goal the only shot the hosts recorded on target - and Lloris could have done little about it.
Matt Doherty (RB) - 6/10 - Frequently got forward and spent much of the game camped in the Stoke half. Question marks over his whereabouts for Stoke's equaliser, with Thompson drifting unmarked to the right-hand side of the Spurs' goal
Davinson Sanchez (CB) - 6/10 - Duties were largely restricted to keeping possession as Stoke rarely threatened the Stoke goal and with Hojbjerg effectively shielding the back four.
Eric Dier (CB) - 6/10 - Like Sanchez, Dier had much more to do in possession than defensively. Retained the ball well, keeping Spurs ticking over in possession.
Ben Davies (LB) - 7/10 - Gave Spurs the lead again with a stunning drive from distance, arrowing a low, sweetly-struck effort into the bottom right-hand corner
6. Midfielders
Harry Winks (CDM) - 8/10 - Floated in a glorious, measured cross from which Bale headed Tottenham into the lead. Broke up play and sent Spurs away on the counter as Alli almost doubled the visitors' lead in the first half.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CDM) - 8/10 - Helped dictate play during spells of Spurs dominance. Shielded the back four expertly and kept it simple in possession.
Dele Alli (CAM) - 6/10 - Right in the thick of the action in the first half, drawing two good saves from Lonergan. Quieter in the second, and was replaced after 65 minutes.
7. Forwards
Gareth Bale (RW) - 7/10 - Deftly guided Winks' cross into the net with his head to open the scoring for Spurs, finishing off the move he had started on halfway. Replaced by Son at the break.
Harry Kane (ST) - 8/10 - Link-up and hold-up play were impressive - including sending Alli through on goal in a good first-half opening. Grabbed Spurs' third with with a terrific finish into the roof of the net.
Lucas Moura (LW) - 6/10 - Neatly teed up Alli in the first half with an intelligent, cushioned header from which Spurs came close to doubling their lead. Replaced after 65 minutes.
8. Substitutes
Son Heung-min - 7/10
Erik Lamela - 6/10
Moussa Sissoko - 6/10
