Sven-Goran Eriksson 'interested' in Aberdeen job but faces competition from fictional character
Now there's a headline you never thought you'd read.
Yes, English football's favourite Mr Burns lookalike and shagger-extraordinaire, Sven-Goran Eriksson, is interested in the vacant Aberdeen job... but faces some unusual competition for the role.
The Pittodrie side are on the lookout for a new boss after the long-serving was dismissed after a dismal run that saw them score just one goal in nine matches. Yet, they still somehow sit nine points ahead of Livingston in fourth (we don't know either).
While sensible names such as Stephen Glass, Shaun Maloney and Derek Adams have been touted, the Daily Record were out with a far more fun headline on Thursday evening.
Former England, Man City and Leicester boss Sven, enticed by the prospect of taking on Rangers and Celtic, has ruled himself in.
He's joined in the running by a Mr Ross Nicholson - someone who was completely made up by a group of Aberdeen fans for a laugh, but is considered as a 10/1 shot by the bookies.
Eriksson, renowned for his romantic exploits as much his management, has been out of work since leaving his post with the Philippines national side in 2019. At 73, he has been waiting for the right opportunity to return.
Few would ever have thought Aberdeen could represent that, but there we go.
The Dons are very much viewed as Scotland's 'third' team, but haven't actually finished third since 2014. They had a run of second-placed finishes before Rangers pulled things together, and have finished fourth in the last two seasons, making way for Kilmarnock and Motherwell respectively.
It looks like they are set for the same this time out after an awful run of form under McInnes, and that prompted chairman Dave Cormack to change track. The 49-year-old left by mutual consent (in other words, he got sacked) earlier this week.
Aberdeen are considering their options to replace the Scot, and former midfielder Stephen Glass, currently in charge of affiliate club Atalanta United's Under-23 side, is the front-runner. But it's said that he could be appointed with Goran-Eriksson, who is open to working in a directorial capacity alongside a younger coach.
Because Sven-Goran Eriksson arriving in the SPFL isn't enough fun on its own, it has even been reported that Scott Brown - Celtic captain - could be set to sign up as a player-coach under the new regime in the summer.
Aberdeen are really going for gold in the patter Olympics.
Eriksson and Brown scrapping with Steven Gerrard and Gary Mac on the touchline? 90min are fully behind it.
TLDR
So jus to recap Sven wants the job, but is only likely to get it as a DOF, working with a manager who wants Scott Brown as his assistant. But, if you want, you can still bet on a fictional character instead...
And they say the EPL is the best league in the world
