The 2022 Premier League table
A hectic 2022, which included the first-ever winter World Cup, is in the footballing rear-view mirror.
Usually there's barely any time for reflection in football, as the new year brings the opening of the winter transfer window and a countdown to the latter stages of the Champions League.
But some, like us here at 90min, like to delve back into the past 12 months and chew over as many statistics as possible. One subject of particular interest is how the calendar year has played out in some of Europe's biggest domestic leagues - usually because it's a good indicator of which teams are making the most consistent strides.
From a Premier League perspective, there's perhaps no surprise that Manchester City were top dogs in 2022, although they only edge out Liverpool - who have faltered badly in the first half of the 2022/23 season - on goal difference.
It's also been an impressive year for current table-toppers Arsenal, as well as Newcastle - who lost just six times under Eddie Howe during 2022. The Magpies chalked up an impressive goal difference of +26 and accrued 72 points, which is Champions League qualification material.
Manchester United and Chelsea weren't so impressive, and there's plenty to be said about the year's of Aston Villa, West Ham, Wolves and Leeds - all of whom chalked up far more defeats than they would have liked.
Everton and Southampton are statistically the worst two teams to have played in the division all year.
