The best European Championship songs of all-time - ranked
By Max Cooper
The Euros are finally here after a five-year wait, and we've whacked out the 'COME ON ENGLAND (Or whichever country you support)' playlist we've made on Spotify.
The world of football has long been linked to the mysterious artistry of music, with players changing career paths to become failed rappers, or simple footballers being forced to record a pre-tournament anthem that will never be erased from the annals of history.
This crossover has produced some absolute stinkers, as you can imagine - but we've also unearthed the odd gem. The World Cup is famous for its musical prowess, but the European Championships? Not so much.
We have picked out 10 of the best songs connected to the European Championships for you to enjoy - or not, you decide.
10. Can You Hear Me - Enrique
Does this have anything to do with football? Enrique Iglesias released 'Can You Hear Me' as the official Euro 2008 song, although we're not entirely sure what inspired this poppy noughties banger.
There is a bloke doing some freestyle moves with a football in the music video, but lyrically, I'm not convinced. Spaniards will hold this song in high esteem however, as it dragged them to European glory at the summer tournament. A classic hits song, but not very football-y.
9. Sing 4 England - Kammy
Is a list complete without Chris Kamara singing 4 England? No, no it's not. Unfortunately for Kammy, his appearance comes quite early in this selection of tunes because, frankly, this song isn't very good.
And for those of us who have no connection to England, it's frankly bizarre and a bit weird. Saying that, the bloke is a legend, and if he got up and did a karaoke rendition, you know we'd all be joining in. Unbelievable!
8. Like a Superstar - Trix & Flix feat. Shaggy
Shaggy is in this list. The famous(?) rapper was supporting Trix and Flix - I want to say, two man-foxes with giant hands? I'm not exactly sure what they are, but they are damn good with a ball at their feet.
The beat is beatalicious, and even if you can't really understand anything Shaggy says, you find yourself swaying hypnotically from side to side, your head tilting in the opposing direction. It's not great, but there are worse songs in the world - obviously.
7. Força - Nelly Furtado
When she's not being a Maneater, Nelly Furtado is screaming Força! for the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal! It's a pop classic and a little bit folky too. It's more of a foot-tapper than a proper singalong and 'throw your hands in the air' vibe, but we'll all scream Força! with her.
The video helps cement the song's place in this list, as it teaches us to work together and achieve our dreams. The boy is pleased to have got his ball back at the end, so we're happy, too.
6. Shaggy - Feel The Rush
Shaggy is in this list twice. The bar is very, very low. In fairness, it's not horrific. Like most Shaggy songs, it's pretty catchy, and then he raps over the beat and you mumble along, pretending to catch a word of what he says.
In a very European theme, the protagonist is rocking a Jamaica jersey, but as with most things Shaggy does, it lacks sense, but it just works. Plus, he's always got a smile on his face, and that bumps him up a couple of places in this selection process.
5. This One's For You - David Guetta ft. Zara Larsson
We're in this togetherrrrr, hear our hearts beat TOGETHERRRRR! The battle cry for Euro 2016, created by Zara Larsson and David Guetta, shows just how far music has come - whether that's a good thing or not, we can't be sure.
It's one that makes the parents say 'Ooh they don't make music like they did back in my day, this is just noise'. If your parents do utter those words, refer them back to some of the earlier efforts in this list, and tell them to be careful what they wish for.
4. All The Way - England Football Team
It's peppy, it's cheery, it's a bunch of English blokes belting out some karaoke like it's Christmas Eve in their local tavern. Tony Adams is pumping iron to the beat of the tune, and he also sits in a racing car and pulls a funny face.
It's got the lot. Not to mention that it prefaced England's 1988 Euro tournament, in which the Three Lions lost all three group games and crashed out with zero points. We're going all the wayyyyyy - home. An absolute belter though, in fairness.
3. All Together Now - The Farm
This one hits you right in the feels - Darius Vassell slotting home to the sound of 1991. The Farm's anthem was re-released and mixed by DJ Spoony in preparation for Euro 2004, giving it a bit more of a footy/England theme.
You can't argue with the quality of the song, and as far as its longevity goes, it's got the legs to stand the test of time. Sadly, whenever I think of this song, I see flashbacks of Wayne Rooney breaking his foot, and simultaneously breaking my heart. All together now, everyone.
2. Campione 2000 - E-Type
The dramatic harmonies at the beginning. The single boot smashing a football. The drums. This is a classic. The Campione chant is something we're all familiar with, but this dance anthem takes it to whole new levels.
The vocals are a touch whiny, and the weird facial close-ups ruin the video. But the classic Campione Ole Ole Ole is iconic. There can be only one!
1. Three Lions - Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds
Everyone seems to know the score. They've seen it all before. They just know! They're so sure! No matter how much time passes, this song will forever be iconic.
It's like looking into an anxiety mirror when watching these lads grimace in despair at the state of English football, only for hope to overwhelm them. Released in 1996, this song welcomed the return of our sport onto home soil. 25 years later, a European final will be gracing Wembley's hallowed turf... it's coming home. Surely not?
