Social media has become intertwined with football.

A selection of topics from within the world's most popular sport trend on Twitter on a daily basis, so there is simply no escape for some of the game's biggest names. Most go steady and keep things safe on the platform, while a few really express themselves and have a bit of fun.

Here are some of the must-follow footballers (or, in some cases, ex-footballers) that boast interesting presences on Twitter.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Let's start with the glaringly obvious; if you're a football fan on Twitter, you will inevitably follow Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar epitomises global stardom, so it's no surprise that he boasts over a whopping 107 million followers on Twitter - more than any other footballer... and a lot more than any football club.

It's always been interesting to get a glimpse into the life of CR7 and, following a switch to Saudi Arabia, British fans are bound to get some rarely-seen content from the former Manchester United forward.

Peter Crouch

The simple question is, why on earth would you not follow Peter Crouch?

The former Liverpool, Portsmouth and Tottenham striker might have specialised in hitting the back of the net in his younger years, but he's nothing but a joke merchant these days.

If you need a giggle, go to Crouchy.

Emmanuel Frimpong

You could quite as easily, though, go to Emmanuel Frimpong's Twitter account for a good laugh.

The former Arsenal midfielder has never really been a straight-laced figure in the world of football, and there's nothing normal about his social media presence, either. The former Ghana international's feed is pretty much a collection of randomness and funnies.

Gareth Bale

Among some of the most followed footballing figures in the world, with a following of over 19 million on Twitter, Gareth Bale is well worth a follow.

He might have left the sport but there is still plenty to come from the Welshman. Having announced his official transfer to the golfing world, it's going to be fun to follow him on his journey with his new club(s).

Robbie Savage

Robbie Savage might be a Marmite character, but his Twitter feed is undeniably pretty interesting.

The Welshman is now on the Board of Macclesfield FC, the phoenix that rose from Macclesfield Town's ashes in 2020, and proudly posts about the eighth-tier club's journey up the pyramid.

Plus, it's a very reliable source from which to get Love Island-related team news.

Gary Neville

Whoever said football and politics shouldn't mix should kindly check out Gary Neville's social media antics.

As well as brilliantly entertaining and truthful governmental scrutiny, though, is also a fantastic mix of humour and opinionated football content that makes the former Manchester United full-back turned pundit's feed an all-encompassing Twitter feast.

Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand is an incredibly active Tweeter, and a funny one at that.

If you're in need of a dose of banter mixed with ball, Rio has your fix. A concoction of pretty rogue chat, footballing punditry and those tasty interactions we all love to see, Ferdinand's Twitter account can do no harm to your daily scrolling.

Allan Saint-Maximin

If you're after laughs, Allan Saint-Maximin is also a pretty good place to start.

The Frenchman has become a cult hero since his move up to Tyneside, and his jovial personality has been a major factor in him fitting straight into the Toon way of life.

All you need to know can be seen above.

Cillian Sheridan

A journeyman that has featured for 13 clubs across two continents and the Republic of Ireland, Cillian Sheridan might not be one of the biggest names in football but he's a popular figure in the Twittersphere.

The Dundee striker is not afraid to just let it out when it comes to social media, having built a reputation for his vastly amusing social media content - from memes to false news that has been known to fool national publications, such as the 'story' he broke above.

A certainty for deep-belly laughs, Sheridan's Twitter account is a must-follow for any football enthusiast.

Aymeric Laporte

If you're not following I'm Eric - sorry, Aymeric - Laporte on Twitter, go and do so immediately.

It's rare for top-flight footballers to let their personalities out so much on social media, but the Manchester City defender has no reservations when it comes to Twitter.

Also a poster of solid footballing content, Laporte is a regular joker - even at the expense of his team mates.

Marten De Roon

Certainly among the most entertaining players online, Marten De Roon definitely challenges for the title of funniest footballer.

The large majority of the Atalanta man's Twitter feed will induce a wide smile and a loud chuckle. From wonderful wordplay to self-joshing jest, De Roon's Tweets are non-stop gold for the lovers of football funnies.
