The Players Brighton Need to Sell This Summer
By Will Day
After nearly being relegated at the end of the 2018/19 season, Brighton have turned their fortunes around under new manager Graham Potter, who guided the Seagulls to a 15th place finish in his first campaign in charge - all while implementing an exciting new brand of football.
Long gone is the defensive, long-ball approach of old, and instead a possession-based attacking approach is now the craze on the south coast.
And due to this tactical upheaval, some players just aren't quite up to the task anymore and will be using this summer to find a new club. Here's a look at who Brighton should be moving along this window.
1. Jason Steele
The former England Under-21 international joined from Sunderland in 2018, and has been third-choice for almost the entirety of his time on the south coast.
Brighton now have five first-team goalkeepers on their books and should look to move the 30-year-old on and give a youngster some more opportunities. They're unlikely to get a decent fee for Steele, but he joined on a free so anything they can get for him is a plus.
Potential Destination: Anywhere in League One
Potential Price: Anything they can muster
2. Shane Duffy
Shane Duffy has been a loyal servant to Brighton over the last few years and will be fondly remembered by the fans. He was a constant fixture under Hughton, forming a solid partnership with Lewis Dunk. Unfortunately for the Irishman, he has fallen out of favour under new manager Graham Potter.
As Potter has looked to change Brighton's footballing identity, it's clear Duffy isn't part of his plans, and with Ben White and Joel Veltmen thrown into the mix next year, he'll find games even harder to come by.
With bags of top flight experience, the Seagulls should expect a decent fee.
Potential Destination: West Brom, Celtic
Potential Price: £10m
3. Florin Andone
Signed from Deportivo de La Coruña, the striker never settled in England scoring just three times in his debut season.
He was shipped to Turkey last year to help him rediscover his goal-scoring touch, but...well...that hasn't exactly happened as the striker managed just two goals in a season devastated by injury.
Seemingly hell-bent on burning all bridges at his parent club, the striker claimed he'd never play for Brighton again. It looks unlikely that Andone will be on the cover of Brighton's football calendar next year.
Potential Destination: Somewhere a long way away from Brighton
Potential Price: £3m
4. Solly March
At one point it looked like Brighton had a real prospect on their hands. Unfortunately, that time has well past and the midfielder has failed to ever really make an impact in the Premier League.
He's found game time hard to come by under the new manager and featured just 19 times last year.
With 90min reporting Premier League interest in the midfielder, Brighton should be looking to move the Lewes born player off their books as they look to progress up the league table under Potter.
Potential Destination: Leeds, Newcastle, Everton
Potential Price: £8m
5. Alireza Jahanbakhsh
After tearing it up in the Eredivisie, Brighton fans were expecting he'd continue these exploits in England.
Sadly, Jahanbakhsh has flopped quite dramatically in the Premier League, he's scored just twice in his time at Brighton and barely featured at all last season. While this might be a relief to commentary teams, Brighton fans will be less pleased. Jahanbakhsh isn't the first high-profile signing to flop for the Seagulls.
He did score a cracker against Chelsea, although it's debatable whether that vindicates the £17m price tag.
The Iranian was prolific in Holland and a move back to his former side might suit all parties.
Potential Destination: AZ Alkmaar
Potential Price: £5m
