The Premier League Clubs Who Should Try to Sign Sergio Romero

Following the recent announcement that Dean Henderson has signed a new five-year deal with Manchester United and is set to stay with the club for the 2020/21 season and battle for the number one shirt with David de Gea, the future looks bleak for Sergio Romero.

The Argentine joined the club seemingly out of the blue in 2015 on a free transfer, but has proven to be an incredibly smart piece of transfer business by the club - something that can't be said all that often about United in recent years.

Romero has been arguably the best backup goalkeeper in the world at United and boasts an incredible record. In 61 appearances, he's kept 39 clean sheets and conceded just 27 goals. While he doesn't feature all that often, he's proven to be a more than competent enough keeper to have between the sticks when he does.

Still just 33 - which is no age for a keeper - Romero is far too good to be sitting as a third choice keeper at any club. With just a year left on his contract, it makes sense for him to move on and for United to recoup a fee for the Argentine while they still can.

Here's a list of Premier League sides that should be in for Romero...

1. Everton

It would be rather embarrassing for £30m man and England number one Jordan Pickford to lose his spot in the Everton team to a 33-year-old Romero, but his inconsistent performances over the last 12 months warrant it.

Pickford is by no means a bad keeper, but Everton signing Romero would mean they have two very capable shot stoppers on the books. It increases competition and probably gives Pickford the kick up the backside he needs in order to get back to his best, without breaking the bank.

2. Aston Villa

Let's face it, Villa's goalkeeper options are poor. Really poor.

Loaning in a 38-year-old Pepe Reina half way through a season in an attempt to improve the situation is like WWE putting Hulk Hogan in a pay-per-view main event in order to salvage some viewing figures. It signals a complete car crash of a scenario, and it's destined to end in tears.

Romero would add significant quality to the squad and improve massively on Orjan Nyland, again at a fair price. But then again, anyone would improve on Nyland. Even Hulk Hogan, probably.

3. West Brom

West Brom already have former United keeper Sam Johnstone in the sticks as their number one, and he's developed into a handy keeper in the Championship.

The Premier League is a different ball park, however, and not something he's experienced in. Bringing in Romero would give him competition to keep him on his toes, but also provide him with invaluable experience to learn from.

Romero would likely move to the Baggies with intentions to become first choice, but it shouldn't be guaranteed to either keeper.

4. Chelsea

Despite spending £71.6m to make Kepa Arrizabalaga the most expensive goalkeeper ever in 2018, Chelsea still aren't convinced by their number one.

Their rampant spending spree in this summer transfer window has been impressive if nothing else, but reports suggest Kepa could be sold if the right offer comes in. If it doesn't, but Frank Lampard still wants a new number one, Romero could be the affordable alternative.

United would likely be reluctant to sell to a top four rival, but with a year left on his contract, they're resigned to losing the Argentine anyway. Romero would make a decent number one in the short term and might even help Kepa out behind the scenes.

5. Southampton

Southampton signed Angus Gunn last summer, but he never quite kicked on to become the first choice they perhaps expected.

Alex McCarthy has been a loyal servant to the club since 2016, but truth be told, the Saints can do better. Ralph Hasenhuttl took them to an 11th place finish last season, but with some more quality in his squad, there's no reason why they can't break into the top half.

They conceded 60 goals last season, which isn't good enough, but Romero would no doubt keep that number down as the undisputed number one.

6. Fulham

Fulham will be cautious not to overspend and fall into a repeat of their disappointing 2018/19 Premier League season, but signing Romero on the cheap would be a great bit of business.

They leaked goals in that torrid top flight season, and while it wasn't entirely down to the goalkeeper, a world class keeper stops it from happening. Young Marek Rodak has claimed the number one spot at Craven Cottage, but is still largely inexperienced.

The 23-year-old could learn a lot from Romero, but would also have to continue improving in order to keep him from becoming first choice keeper. Signing the Argentine would create good competition amongst the ranks.
