The winner of the PFA Vertu Motors WSL Fans' Player of the Month - January
By 90min Staff
Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw has won the PFA Vertu Motors WSL Fans' Player of the Month for January in recognition of her recent performances.
Shaw, who took 34% of the overall vote to finish ahead of Manchester United defender Ona Batlle (25%), is the second Manchester City player to win the monthly award this season following in the footsteps of teammate Laura Coombs for December.
Shaw has stepped out of the shadow of Ellen White at the Academy Stadium in a big way this season to lead the line for Gareth Taylor’s new look City side.
The Jamaica international has consistently been involved in scoring and creating goals for her team throughout the campaign so far and January was no different.
Keeping her Golden Boot claim strong, Shaw scored her ninth WSL goal of the season when City beat West Ham when the league returned from its winter break.
Shaw and City peppered the Hammers goal with shots and she eventually got the breakthrough early in the half, proving to be the only goal of the match in the end.
With every result vital in arguably the most competitive WSL season to date – especially among the top clubs fighting for Champions League qualification – Shaw ensured that City would later also take a point from a tough game against a troublesome Aston Villa that had won the reverse fixture. She set up Deyna Castellanos in that 1-1 draw, as well as creating three other chances in the game.
Everton pair Jess Park and Gabby George, Aston Villa maestro Kenza Dali and Manchester United defender Maya Le Tissier were the other players nominated alongside Shaw and runner-up Batlle.
