Tottenham have appointed ex-Bolton defender Gretar Steinsson as their new performance director.

Steinsson has previously served as Everton's head of recruitment and development and most recently worked as a technical advisor for the Icelandic FA in his home country.

The former right-back's playing career spanned Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Turkey and England, where he spent four seasons with the Trotters.

Steinsson had spent four seasons in his backroom role with Everton before quitting the club in December last year following director of football Marcel Brands' departure.

It had been reported that managing director of football Fabio Paratici had been on the lookout for new additions to his staff, and it seems the Italian has got his man.

The 40-year-old will essentially be Paratici's right-hand man, charged with being the architect and orchestrator of overall performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That will of course involve assisting Paratici and head coach Antonio Conte in identifying suitable transfer targets to strengthen the Spurs squad - a priority following their return to the Champions League next season.

Steinsson will likely be getting straight to work, although Tottenham have already been busy in the market. The north Londoners have made three major signings in the form of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison, while Fraser Forster has also joined as a back-up goalkeeper.
