Trent Alexander-Arnold considers potential Liverpool midfield role

Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that he is open to playing in midfield for Liverpool during the 2023/24 season.

Alexander-Arnold has long been regarded one of the best right-backs in the Premier League. However, his ability to excel further forward was also made clear during the most recent international break when England manager Gareth Southgate used the 24-year-old as a central midfielder.

In his two games in that position against Malta and North Macedonia, Alexander-Arnold bagged himself a goal and an assist and earned plenty of plaudits.

Speaking to Sky Sports about potentially playing in midfield for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold said that he would be open to it: "It's not my decision. I only play where I'm told to play so you know all I can say is I enjoy playing football, I enjoy playing right-back, I enjoy playing in the middle of the pitch a lot.

"It's somewhere where I find joy and I'm enjoying the challenge of the two so you know I would enjoy playing there in the next season but it's not my decision where I play."

The England international was utilised as an inverted full-back, pushing into the midfield to dictate play for the Reds, at the tail-end of the 2022/23 season with a view to playing that role long-term. Liverpool have also recently acquired Domink Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to play in the centre of the pitch, giving Jurgen Klopp more options than ever in that area.
