In the ridiculously partisan world of football Twitter, it's rare that an event can bring together all sides of the debate in near universal agreement.

Rival fans are usually too busy flinging insults at each other to find any sort of common ground but in a unlikely moment of communality, supporters banded together in outrage over Manchester United's award of a penalty against Aston Villa on Thursday night.

Before we delved into the incendiary reaction, let's set the scene.

In a shocking turn of events, relegation threatened Villa had actually started the game brighter with Trezeguet going within centimetres of giving them the lead just before the half hour mark.

Minutes later, disaster struck. Receiving the ball on the edge of the Villa box, Bruno Fernandes spun around and caught Ezri Konsa before throwing himself to the ground. A fairly innocuous incident, right? Wrong.

Jon Moss incredibly pointed to the spot. Never mind though, surely VAR cleared it up right? Wrong again.

The technology rubber stamped the decision and Fernandes duly converted. Cue uproar on social media...

Even 90min's very own continguent of United fans admitted that the decision was... soft to say the least.

This is not the first time that United have been blessed with a controversial penalty receipt this season.

Against Villa they were awarded their 13th spot kick of the campaign which unsurprisingly is a joint all-time Premier League record - and there's still some games left to go.

As if the decision wasn't unpopular enough it also attracted particular ire from Fantasy Premier League players.

Despite winning and converting the penalty, it was revealed that Fernandes was only getting points for a goal as a opposed to a goal and an assists.

There really is no justice in the world is there.
