Twitter Goes Nuts as Man Utd Get Ludicrously Controversial Penalty Against Aston Villa

In the ridiculously partisan world of football Twitter, it's rare that an event can bring together all sides of the debate in near universal agreement.
Rival fans are usually too busy flinging insults at each other to find any sort of common ground but in a unlikely moment of communality, supporters banded together in outrage over Manchester United's award of a penalty against Aston Villa on Thursday night.
27' | Goal. Moments after Trezeguet hit the post at the other end, Bruno Fernandes gives United the lead from the spot.

Before we delved into the incendiary reaction, let's set the scene.
In a shocking turn of events, relegation threatened Villa had actually started the game brighter with Trezeguet going within centimetres of giving them the lead just before the half hour mark.
Chance for Villa. Trezeguet wins posssesion and strikes the post from range. Need to fix up here.

This isn’t the time for Aston Villa’s Trezeguet to play like David Trezeguet.

Minutes later, disaster struck. Receiving the ball on the edge of the Villa box, Bruno Fernandes spun around and caught Ezri Konsa before throwing himself to the ground. A fairly innocuous incident, right? Wrong.
Jon Moss incredibly pointed to the spot. Never mind though, surely VAR cleared it up right? Wrong again.

The technology rubber stamped the decision and Fernandes duly converted. Cue uproar on social media...
I’m baffled by that penalty award. Fernandes deliberately runs over the ball and then treads on his opponent and goes down. What am I missing?

2 penalties tonight, very similar, shouldn’t have been given. First Ward-Prowse, then Bruno Fernandes. 2 attackers just jumping into defenders with momentum and falling. Absurd stuff really.
— Sam Tighe (@stighefootball) July 9, 2020
Why we need referees explaining decisions to fans.
— Rob Harris (@RobHarris) July 9, 2020
Bruno Fernandes seemed to jump into Konsa yet wins penalty
That's a poor decision. Very fortunate for United, looked like a dive from Fernandes and potentially a free kick to Villa. Similar to what BF did against Spurs a few weeks back. #AVLMUN

Even 90min's very own continguent of United fans admitted that the decision was... soft to say the least.
Not sure that was a penalty but ok, take it ?
— Jamie Spencer ?? (@jamiespencer155) July 9, 2020
I’m really not sure. But since it’s disputable maybe they won’t overrule it?

This is not the first time that United have been blessed with a controversial penalty receipt this season.
Against Villa they were awarded their 13th spot kick of the campaign which unsurprisingly is a joint all-time Premier League record - and there's still some games left to go.
13 penalties this season for Man Utd - no team has ever had more in a PL season
— Duncan Alexander (@oilysailor) July 9, 2020
16.5% - Manchester United have been awarded 13 of the 79 penalties taken in this season's Premier League (16.5%) - the highest proportion of any side in a season in the competition's history. Gain. pic.twitter.com/uvuGzKjgoD

We are approaching the point where refs should simply not be allowed to call penalties for Man United until we figure out why they seem to get 2x as many as every other team.
— Ted Knutson (@mixedknuts) July 9, 2020
As if the decision wasn't unpopular enough it also attracted particular ire from Fantasy Premier League players.
Despite winning and converting the penalty, it was revealed that Fernandes was only getting points for a goal as a opposed to a goal and an assists.
There really is no justice in the world is there.
Goal - Bruno

Assist - Fernandes
Give him the assist points aswell
— Ross Gates (@WFC_Ross) July 9, 2020
Eh he won the pen how's he not getting the assist? You are out to try cost me the title! Absolute agenda!
