Twitter reacts as England ease into World Cup quarter-final

England are through to the quarter-final of the World Cup after easing past Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16.
Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka were enough to book the Three Lions a date with France, with victory in the end achieved with relative ease.
There were some eye-catching performances once more, with Gareth Southgate's side more than good enough to see off the challenge of the Lions of Teranga.
Here's how the game unfolded on the delight that is Twitter...
Cagey opening - England poor?
England began the game in pretty cagey fashion - a few shaky moments from Harry Maguire and John Stones, some poor passing out from the back and a couple of efforts on goal for Senegal.
It had a World Cup round of 16 tension in the air.
The Three Lions have set such high standard for themselves that when it doesn't come off, it's the end of the world for some when things are a little slow to get going. This was again the case on everybody's favourite social media platform, who were pretty quick to lambast the quality of England's performance early on.
(Just to be clear, it wasn't great and was a tad uninspiring - tournament footer though, right?)
Maguire has had a few shaky moments so far here. Not showing the same composure as during the group stage. Bellingham looking the brightest for #eng but all pretty cagey stuff in the opening 25 minutes.

England look nervous, Senegal look dangerous, and Kane looks sluggish.
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) December 4, 2022
Thank God England stopped trying to pass it from the back, our defence was poor. Only half time but the last 10 mins was much better. #SENENG
— Lord Flymo (@LordFlymo) December 4, 2022
Polish over the cracks… defensively worrying and the right side looks poor… France could stuff us… Hope I’m proven wrong… Think we got out of jail… @England #ENGvsSEN
— Chris Bolton (@bolton_chris) December 4, 2022
England under Southgate are just so boring and poor. No one wants the ball, everyone static. Just not good! #FIFAWorldCup
— British Sooner (@British_Sooner) December 4, 2022
This is piss poor from England, too much fan time around with sideways passes at the back, if you are playing through the thirds, you have to pass it forwards
— Calling All Astronauts (@CAA_Official) December 4, 2022
This is a simply awful performance so far from England.Barely able to move the ball forward everything going lateral or backwards.Poor movement.Abject
— Colm O'Keeffe (@Cokeeffe1) December 4, 2022
This is so poor. Absolutely no attacking threat up top and as it stands, England will lose this game (as Pickford makes a great save!). Henderson and Saka have been awful - Rashford and Grealish should have started
— JoelSaffer (@JoelSaffer) December 4, 2022
Very poor by England so far

Bellingham brilliance
With just over half an hour played, England were looking for a little bit of spark and inspiration to get them motoring. They hadn't been awful but they were certainly a long way short of what they're capable of.
Enter, Jude Bellingham.
The Borussia Dortmund teenager, one of the most in-demand players in world football, burst through the lines after some terrific forward play by Harry Kane. He sauntered into the box, squared the ball with a perfect weight of pass and Jordan Henderson slid England ahead.
Not content with setting up just one, Bellingham then cut Senegal's midfield to ribbons with a delicious piece of play. He eventually broke the lines to release Phil Foden, and he put the ball on a plate for Harry Kane to advance on goal and make it two.
The praise was high, as you'd expect...
Oh yes @HKane on a plate from the best player on the pitch @BellinghamJude 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙋🏼♂️ #ENGSEN
— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) December 4, 2022
Could get used to watching that combination. Brilliant from Bellingham, what a run and finish from Henderson.
— James Pearce (@JamesPearceLFC) December 4, 2022
Sensational from @BellinghamJude again, he does everything, and @HKane gets his first goal of the tournament. Happy days.
— Gary Lineker 💙💛 (@GaryLineker) December 4, 2022
Bellingham might already be England's best player.
— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) December 4, 2022
That is utterly sensational from Bellingham to start that break, getting there before Ciss, bursting past Sabaly, driving forward, left foot pass to Foden who sets up Kane. Genuine Gerrard/Ballack vibes, what a player. 2-0.
— Jack Pitt-Brooke (@JackPittBrooke) December 4, 2022
Six touches to carry the ball from the edge of England’s box into the Senegal half before releasing Foden. Just sensational from Bellingham. And he’s only 19!
— Ed Aarons (@ed_aarons) December 4, 2022
*insert club here* SIGN JUDE BELLINGHAM
— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) December 4, 2022
Bellignham is unreal !!!!!!
— Lawrence Bury (@lawrence_bury) December 4, 2022
GOAL. Harry Kane! 2-0!
— Luis Miguel Echegaray (@lmechegaray) December 4, 2022
Jude Bellingham you are an absolute STAR. What a run and vision. That boy is MAGIC.
Harry Kane quality
Bellingham may have been the player to unlock the Senegal door for England, but there was also an abundance of praise for Kane - who notched his 52nd goal for the Three Lions, leaving him just one behind Wayne Rooney.
His positioning was impeccable, and after collecting taking Foden's pass in his stride, he rifled the ball past Edouard Mendy with ease to double England's advantage.
Best striker in the world? Some seemed to think so...
If you don’t rate Harry Kane based on trophies you cannot be taken seriously… he’s quite literally the perfect number 9.
— ًE. (@UtdEIIis) December 4, 2022
Never in doubt, class will out: Harry Kane scores. 2-0 #ENG
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) December 4, 2022
Harry Kane treats tournament group stages like he does the month of August in the Premier League.
— Amos Murphy (@AmosMurphy_) December 4, 2022
Look at Harry Kane in the build up for that goal anyone that thinks he’s having a poor tournament due to a lack of goals CANT doesn’t understand this sport.
— ًE. (@UtdEIIis) December 4, 2022
HARRY KANE IS THE BEST STRIKER IN THE WORLD.
— Danny (@DannyAaronsFUT) December 4, 2022
Harry Kane is outside of the 66 lot, is the greatest ever English player. If you disagree with this you're an Arsenal fan. Which means you're incorrect on more than just this.
— Bardi (@BardiTEI) December 4, 2022
I’ll die on the hill that Harry Kane is the best striker in the world

Foden and Saka make it three
Senegal boss Aliou Cisse made a trio of changes at half-time, looking to bolster numbers in midfield and compete with an England side who had gone through the gears in the final 10 minutes of the half.
But any hopes the former Portsmouth midfielder had of seeing his side get back into the game were extinguished by another of England's two young guns - Foden and Bukayo Saka.
The former took the ball brilliantly in his stride after more good work from Kane, and his drop off the hip and shoulder opened up a crossing opportunity. The Manchester City man duly delivered the ball on a plate for Saka, who did the rest with a lovely clipped finish past Mendy.
Incredible dribbling from Foden. This is a great performance.
— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) December 4, 2022
#eng 3-0 #sen Foden cross, Saka with a lovely finish. Think we can say Southgate has got the selection calls right again here.
— James Olley (@JamesOlley) December 4, 2022
Saka and Foden now the next to fully justify starting this game.
— Mark Mann-Bryans (@MarkyMBryans) December 4, 2022
Hard for Southgate to drop Rashford but another vindication of his decision-making in Qatar so far.
Wow. Phenomenal from Foden and Saka. #ENG cruising and very likely to face… #FRA 😳💪🏽
— RKZ (@RKZUK) December 4, 2022
Foden involved in all three England goals. We'e seeing the Manchester City Foden in an England shirt now.
— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) December 4, 2022
Complete vindication for Southgate. If England have to sacrifice a winger to start Foden then so be it. He’s their best player. Wonderfully deft finish by Saka. Some quarter-final on Saturday.
— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) December 4, 2022
FODEN😳😳😳😳😳🙏 how good is this guy mate..⭐️
— Gerard Deulofeu (@gerardeulofeu) December 4, 2022
another slick goal. foden and saka. young boys cooking!
— Craig Mitch (@CraigxMitch) December 4, 2022
England 3-0. Brilliant by Foden. Brilliant by Saka. Inviting cross and lovely delicate finish.
— Phil McNulty (@philmcnulty) December 4, 2022
Phil Foden is unbelievably good at football.
— Tom Young (@TomYoungSJ) December 4, 2022
Fantastic pass from Foden. Neat finish from Saka.
— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) December 4, 2022
The verdict? All hail Gareth Southgate
3-0, England through to the World Cup quarter-final and a date with France.
Eight knockout games played, eight undefeated in 90 minutes - not bad at all.
Beautiful football again from @England. Credit to Gareth Southgate for his decisions. Both his controversial picks have played a part and scored. What a time to be alive!
— Gary Lineker 💙💛 (@GaryLineker) December 4, 2022
Gareth Southgate is good at this.
— Carl Anka (@Ankaman616) December 4, 2022
You can argue what the *this* is, or whether there are different International Football managers who are better at it.
But Southgate is good at this.

Interested to see the timeline on Saturday when Southgate cracks out the 3-at-the-back sufferball against France

Gareth Southgate getting every selection decision right again, is it.
— Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) December 4, 2022
I get it is not the most inspiring play in the world, and can lead to disappointing results if you don't score in that 'active' period, but I think any suggestion the future lies away from Gareth Southgate is wild.
