Twitter reacts as England ensure home advantage for Euro 2020 round of 16 tie

Czech Republic 0-1 England was a real game of two halves. The first 45 minutes were the most exciting of the Three Lions campaign so far.
The second was boring. Really boring.
That did not matter to most England fans, though. All that they cared about was that the team had ensured they'll have home advantage in the round of 16 with the tie set to be played at Wembley next Tuesday.
Job done! ✅

Before the action we had the excitement of Southgate's starting XI being revealed. Thanks to Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell both having to self-isolate and the fact that England had already qualified, there was potential for some interesting inclusions.
So it proved, with Our 21's very own Bukayo Saka handed a maiden start, alongside Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish. Unfortunately, there was no place in the side for Jadon Sancho and some people were not impressed.
Worth noting Saka's opposite man tonight is Jan Boril.
— Simon Collings (@sr_collings) June 22, 2021
Saka tormented him so much when Arsenal played Slavia Prague, when they won 4-0, the left-back was hooked at half-time.
Wondering if part of Southgate's thinking.
Tyrone Mings hasn’t step a foot wrong in the Euros so far, 2 games 2 clean sheets, what happens?
— Ty Bracey (@TyBracey) June 22, 2021
Dropped for Harry Maguire ?
I do like Saka, but really not sure what Sancho has done not to start this game.
— Liam Henshaw (@HenshawAnalysis) June 22, 2021
Saka might be more defensively disciplined, but with Walker at RB Sancho would be good to go from the right. Baffled personally. #ENG
I love Bukayo Saka. Love him. Think he’s an amazing player. But this continued Sancho thing is baffling to me.
— target man respecter (@oliwrath) June 22, 2021
Saka getting a start before Rashford & Sancho is a criminal offence.

Bukayo Saka is a very talented kid but him starting over Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford is CRAZY, especially with what Gareth Southgate said about “experience”.

Inside two minutes England fans across the country thought Raheem Sterling had given them the lead with a clever lob...only for the ball to clip the post and bounce clear.
Damn.

Absolute class ball from Luke Shaw to Sterling, who hits the post. Opposite foot but similar ball to what Mount was feeding Sterling with.

Sterling with a chipped effort now!
One of these Brendan Rodgers' style fast starts will come off and England will be rolling.

#ENG hit the woodwork early in a third straight match. Shaw smarty played over to Sterling, whose effort comes back off the far post. Good play
— Simon Peach (@SimonPeach) June 22, 2021
Just 10 minutes later Sterling would get the Three Lions faithful out of their seats. After top work from Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish found himself in a crossing position and he placed one straight onto the head of his teammate, who made no mistake.
The boy from Brent wheeled off in celebration, once again answering those who have questioned his place in the team.

2 - Raheem Sterling is only the second player to score each of England's first two goals at a EUROs tournament after Alan Shearer in 1996, with all four goals among the two players coming at Wembley. Silenced. #ENG #EURO2020 pic.twitter.com/Z0OZGt0I79

Btw that was not a "tap in" that was Sterling with phenomenal positional awareness, movement and finishing. There is no such thing as a tap in, its just a way to discredit a player.

That wasn't all that happened in the first half either. Harry Kane also went close, although perhaps he should have squared it Sterling. Where have we heard that before?
Saka and Grealish continued to impress as well. All in all, a great opening 45 minutes.
Not the first time we've seen Kane refuse to square it to Sterling... pic.twitter.com/pZlMuATzyX

Harry Kane should have squared it to Raheem Sterling. I think that's called Déjà vu.
— Boring James Milner (@BoringMilner) June 22, 2021
After the break England reverted to type, settling for sterile possession and keeping their opponents at arm's length.
Most agreed that the game was crying out for Sancho, but Southgate was not budging.
Will Southgate try to sell Sancho at halftime for 90 mill+ add-ons ..?

Am surprised Bellingham and Sancho not getting a go. Significant contributions in team that finished 3rd in league, won a trophy and reached CL quarter-finals.

I heard United had a deal agreed for Sancho including 10m in addons for 5 English caps, but Dortmund have asked for re-negotiations as they want to get paid before 2040.

BREAKING NEWS
— Ronan Murphy (@swearimnotpaul) June 22, 2021
Gareth Southgate only learned today that Sancho’s first name is not actually Jason: “It’s funny, I’ve been calling him Jason all along. I was like ‘Jason, you sit in the stands,’ ‘no need to warm up, Jason,’ things like that. He never complained.”
In the end Sancho would get on - for all of six minutes at the end.
The Dortmund man helped his side see out the result, in what was a professional if not particularly exciting second half display.
The overall reaction to the result was one of quiet satisfaction, although most recognised that there are bigger tests to come.
The English media grossly underrate Sancho because “we haven't seen it for England”—a really poor criteria—but that's OK. I'd much prefer Sancho not to have as much hype by them and be rested more in the summer before coming to us…if/when that happens.
