England are out of the World Cup once again, having succumbed to a spirited performance by France to lose 2-1 in the quarter-finals.
It was a brave and at times thrilling performance from the Three Lions, who dominated swathes of the match and had a crucial chance to equalise when Harry Kane blazed a late penalty over the bar.
As always, Twitter was abuzz with activity during the match and we've selected some choice tweets collected over the 90 minutes.
The game started off at pace, with both sides looking to push up and quickly move the ball into threatening areas. With barely 15 minutes on the clock, France found the breakthrough with a rasping drive from Aurelien Tchouameni.

It’s just such a a good hit from Tchouameni. Really thought he’d have to hit it first time to have any chance. To generate the power and accuracy in that situation is just brilliant.

The man who Jurgen Klopp wanted at all costs after spent days calling the player in May… but also the man who only wanted to join Real Madrid.

England responded well to the setback and continued to push for a goal of their own, leading to the biggest flashpoint of the first half when Harry Kane was controversially denied a penalty.
The big talking point 🗣️

After seeing it again at half-time, what are you saying?#ENGFRA | #FIFAWorldCup2022 pic.twitter.com/7eG2s0clDD
One hundred percent foul on Saka. One hundred percent penalty on Kane.

With a number of decisions going against the Three Lions, it's safe to say that fans weren't best pleased with the standard of officiating.
You can question England’s pace in possession, but you cannot question the pace of England fans on vengeful Wikipedia edits #ENGFRA pic.twitter.com/QTW2p3y6UB

While we'd never want to suggest that England fans might be slightly biased, claims of the referee's corruption seemed to fall flat when he awarded England a penalty shortly after the break.
Kane duly stepped up and converted to send England fans into raptures.
Captain Kane made no mistake with that one!

Harry Kane draws level with Wayne Rooney, meaning only Own Goals (57) has scored more for England.

Harry Kane has scored or assisted 5 goals at the 2022 World Cup. Only Lionel Messi (6) and Kylian Mbappe(7) have more:

One of the big talking points leading up to the match was the battle between Kylian Mbappe and Kyle Walker down England's right flank, with Southgate alleged to have devised a plan to tackle the forward. Suffice to say, it didn't work terribly well.
Man Mbappe just took Kyle Walker’s whole career, crumpled it up into a little ball and flicked it out of his way.
— Mike L. Goodman (@TheM_L_G) December 10, 2022
Never seen Kyle Walker struggle to keep up with someone like that. Incredible.
— Zito (@_Zeets) December 10, 2022
Okay so Mbappé appears to have a seventh gear.
— Musa Okwonga (@Okwonga) December 10, 2022
Before long, however, attention turned back to referee Wilton Sampaio after he seemed to overlook France's players repeatedly fouling the energetic Bukayo Saka.
What is this ref smoking?

Saka is being booted out of the game it is HORRENDOUS.
How is that not a foul on Saka?!?

It was beginning to look like the tide was turning in England's favour. Enter Olivier Giroud.
Having been all but marked out of the game for 75 minutes, France's all-time leading goalscorer popped up in the box to meet Antoine Griezmann's gorgeous cross with a thumping header to make it 2-1.

What a ball from Griezmann. He’s the difference every time for France in Qatar. Serious contender for player of the tournament.

But less than five minutes later, England had a chance to draw level again after another clumsy foul earned the Three Lions a second penalty.
To the shock of just about everyone watching the game, Kane was not able to add his second goal and blazed the penalty over the bar, spurning a glorious chance for England to equalise.

Not content to accept that their side had simply lost to a superior set of players, fans quickly began dissecting and criticising Southgate's choices during the match to find a reason for England's exit. Good luck, Gareth!
Feels a bit off that you’re going out the World Cup and decide to leave arguably the country’s most in-form player in James Maddison on the bench, alongside one of its most creative in Trent. Grealish only called on for 1.5 mins too.

Can’t say I wasn’t happy to see Saka go off as someone who wants to see England lose and him stay healthy, but man. That was a bad sub lmfao
— Aaron West (@oeste) December 10, 2022
Saka was causing real stress but they took him off. I’m sure Deschamps will say, thank you.

Whether Southgate stays on as England manager after this World Cup remains to be seen - but either way, it could be a long few months for the former Middlesbrough boss.
