Manchester City missed a glorious chance to close the gap at the top of the Premier League on Sunday, succumbing to a record-breaking Harry Kane goal in north London.

Prior to kick off all the talk was about Pep Guardiola's rather odd team selection.

The main point of contention for many was the fact that the best footballer Man City have on their books, Kevin De Bruyne, was on the bench.

Inside the opening 15 minutes, Tottenham took the lead through Harry Kane. The forward coolly slotted past Ederson after some great pressing from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg/terrible play from Rodri on the edge of his own box, to make it 1-0 and, more importantly, become Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer.

267 goals for Tottenham. 200 goals in the Premier League.

Pretty damn impressive.

Tottenham were largely able to keep City at arm's length for the majority of the rest of the half, with the visitors struggling to not just pass the ball square and pointlessly instead of trying to find one of Erling Haaland's many runs in behind.

Despite that, City did manage to create one chance before the end of the first half, as Riyad Mahrez hit the post after cutting in from the right.

The second half proved to play out in quite a similar fashion to the first. Manchester City had all of the ball, but Tottenham looked more the more threatening when in the final third.

While Hugo Lloris remained a surprising passenger, Ederson was called into action a few times following quick counter attacks from Spurs.

Things turned in Man City's favour in the final minutes of the game when Cristian Romero received his marching orders for a typically full-blooded tackle Jack Grealish.

It was the one trillionth free kick that Grealish won during the game.

In the end however, the sending didn't really make a massive difference. Tottenham remained tight at the back, City remained tepid in attack, and ultimately the home side deserved all three points.
